Stepping into the salon makes me feel pampered; stepping out I feel like a million bucks until I check my wallet! The trick to a great salon experience is to leave with some money in your pocket and not just the jingling coin kind. You don't have to swear off salons and invest in a Flowbee to save hundreds a year. Apply these four secrets to your next trip and leave with enough money for a cool pair of swanky heels--or at least lunch.
Do the prep work at home. Unlike some of my friends, I don't actually enjoy the shampoo bowl experience. It hurts my neck (I'm short), I feel self conscious and it costs me extra. Opt out of the shampoo and do it at home. Arrive at the salon with clean, conditioned hair and you'll save money.
Color your own hair: Unlike 20 years ago, today's at-home hair dye kits are safe and easy to use. Try coloring your own hair for a change. Remember the rule though, only go two shades lighter or darker. Going too dark or too light might be too extreme.
Visit the discount salon. For a new, complicated haircut, visit your favorite hairstylist. For a quick trim or an easy cut, visit the discount salon. If you just want bangs trimmed or tipped, the discount salon is the place to go!
Don't buy salon products. Smile and nod, but don't buy the salon products. No matter how fabulous your hair smells or how great the salesgirl is, kindly refuse. If saving money is important to you a $40 shampoo is a bad spending decision.
