5 mistakes people make when selling used clothing

Used clothing has actually become a hot item on auction sites and through other selling methods. The only problem is that many people don't follow a few simple rules, which leads to unhappy customers or no sales at all. Whether you're selling online or having a yard sale, there are mistakes that can be made. Here are just five mistakes people make when selling used clothing.

    Forgetting to Wash the Item

If your items have been stored for any period of time, it's important to wash them before selling. Someone buying used clothing wants to smell fresh clothing, not musky fabric. If for some reason you absolutely cannot wash the item, spray it down with fabric spray to make it smell clean and fresh. This will result in a much happier customer.

Selling Items That Are Too Worn

Another mistake sellers make is trying to sell items that are too worn. You don't want to sell items that are stained, frayed, faded or holey. It's important that the items look as good as possible. Not only does this ensure that the items sell quickly, but it will encourage buyers to come back.

    Writing a Weak Description

When you're selling online, you want a description that fully describes the item. A description that reads, "Pink pajamas. Size large." is very weak. You want to describe the item as best as possible. For example, it might read, "Pink leopard print pajamas made of 100% cotton. These pajamas are a size large and fit sizes 12-14 and the inseam is 30 inches. These pajamas are used, but in like new condition. There are no tears, holes or stains."

    Taking Too Few Pictures

One of the biggest mistakes people make when selling used clothing online is not taking enough pictures. Many people take one picture that isn't even clear. You want to take at least three pictures that show the front and back of the item along with any features that need to be pointed out.

    Not Showcasing Each Piece

Last, but not least, whether you're selling used clothing online or at a yard sale, you want to showcase each piece. For example, if you're having a yard sale, take the best items and hang them so that people can easily see them. If you're selling a lot of clothing online, take pictures that give you the best look of each piece. In other words, you don't want to stack 6 items together and take one picture.

Used clothing does sell and it's a great way to make extra money. Whether you're picking up items at thrift stores to resale or selling items from your own closet, you need to avoid these common mistakes when selling used clothing.
