How do you know your kids will turn out well? Parenting has to be the most worrisome occupation ever. You're responsible for turning your child into an equally responsible adult. Then, there's their health, education and general welfare. Wait. I'm supposed to be reassuring you here. It's OK. It's a tough world out there but don't worry. Your kids will be fine. What makes me so sure?
You're well intended.
You're not a super parent. No one is. We all have our faults. We all make parenting blunders. Yes, even me. Still, most of us want what's best for our kids. Not only that, we do our best to see that they learn the right lessons along the way. What's more, if you can't teach them everything, their own failures will. It's just the way things work.
Struggle equals lessons.
You're a savvy parent. Every once in a while, you let your kids take a tumble. When they make those little mistakes, you don't do their clean up for them. You make it clear they're responsible for making things right. Your kids will grow up learning how to pick themselves up after a fall. That way, they'll be alright, even when you're not around to kiss their boo-boos.
You let them learn from others.
Great parents know they can't take all the credit for their kids' accomplishments. Doing so would give kids the wrong example. You don't want them taking credit for the work of others, right? Of course not. What else? When kids learn from a variety of people, they learn a variety of solutions, wisdom and knowledge. That's what makes them well rounded, worldly and tolerant.
You tell them they're awesome.
When kids triumph over adversity, you're their biggest cheerleader. You boost their confidence by letting them know exactly how proud you are of them and why. You know it's not enough to just tell them you're proud of them. You give them the details so they'll know your words are genuine. Give yourself a pat on the back too. It takes a lot of work to raise kids as incredible as yours.
You keep your sense of humor and your smile.
It's not easy to smile some days. Your kids will be the biggest challenge you'll ever face. You face it with a positive attitude. Doing so gives kids the encouragement to go on when things get rough. You're a smart parent. You know a smile can make all the difference in your day. Your kids will be just fine. Why? Because they have you for a parent.
