Just because you know that you can't completely solve someone else's problems doesn't mean that you shouldn't at least try to help her or him. Listening to a friend's or relative's problems and making some suggestions could do a lot to put that person on a better track. Plus, being there for someone else will prove that you can be counted on, and it will give you a chance to put some good energy into a relationship that is too important to sacrifice.
Your biggest obstacles today are likely to be inside you. More specifically, feelings of resentment towards authority and overpraised friends and colleagues could put a damper on your work ethic. This should not be enough to hold you back. Muster your strength, and plow unabashedly through these minor barricades.
