Try to avoid learning too many details about another person's finances today -- especially if it's a friend. Knowing how much they make or how much they owe will inevitably affect how you see them, and it shouldn't. So avoid acquiring this knowledge however you can. If their checkbook falls open, look away. If they start to tell you details about their raise at work, change the subject. It's not wise to add this dynamic to what is supposed to be a non-competitive, supportive relationship.
