The people around you are moving at their own (somewhat slower) pace, and they're doing just fine -- you need to follow their example. Pushing yourself and pushing other people to keep up is a lose-lose proposition.
Don't let your mind get to you today. Feelings of being threatened and frightened will soon pass. Take short trips if you're traveling. Having a partner to fill the void is not in your favor today.
