If you are trying to convince someone to agree to your ideas or opinions, today, you must remember that people like to be charmed into agreeing with you -- they don't like to feel forced. So avoid being combative by showing them that you can see things from their perspective. If they truly believe that you are acting in their best interests (and you are), they will trust you more and listen to you longer. Make sure you do enough research ahead of time to have all the answers that they need.
