How to Cover Up an Ugly Wall

By Ramshackle Glam's Jordan Reid for GalTime.com

It's possible to hide that ugly wall. It's possible to hide that ugly wall. I'm an avid reader of your blog, and wanted to ask for your creative input on an unfortunate home decor situation. My apartment has a large textured, stuccoed wall that I can't stand. It feels very Miami. Not in a good way. Because we rent, I can't do anything that will permanently alter or damage the wall. I also don't want to spend a fortune - no more than $50 - $75. Do you have any ideas as to how to improve? I will send you a photo of the wall for reference.

    Thanks so much!

    Mary

    A. Well, I'm sort of a fan of the '70s look (I know, I know) so I'd probably try to give a little nod to the Miami-ish feel with my decor (art deco touches, etc). It doesn't sound like that's your thing, though (and it's probably not most people's) but no problem - there are tons of easy, inexpensive ways to hide an unattractive wall.

Photo Credit: Victor SchragerPhoto Credit: Victor SchragerMy favorite look: buy a ton of differently-sized mirrors at a thrift shop, a craft store, or online, and hang them all over the wall (this has the added benefit of making your apartment look much bigger). You can also create neat, inexpensive artwork by purchasing a bunch of thrift-shop frames and putting interesting wallpaper or fabric scraps inside them.

Tip: When creating a wall arrangement of mismatched mirrors or picture frames, hang the largest, most eye-catching piece a little off-center, and then arrange the smaller pieces around it.

And here's another, slightly more labor-intensive idea: I'm sure you've thought of hanging fabric panels to cover the wall (you can use shower rods or curtain rods if the room isn't too big), but what about using a similar technique to hang wallpaper panels? This will require you to make a few nail holes along the top edge of the wall, but if you're careful they'll be easy to fill back in with a little putty on move-out day.

What you'll need: 2x the amount of wallpaper necessary to cover the wall (only half of it will be facing outwards, so you can buy cheap stuff for the side that'll face inwards to save money). Glue together the wallpaper panels back-to-back to give the piece more heft, and nail the top edge of the panels to the wall using a thin piece of wooden molding (you can purchase this at the Home Depot). You can also stain the molding pieces to match or contrast with the paper (of course, remember to do this before affixing the wallpaper).

tack up some drop dead gorgeous inexpensive fabric that qurdinates with the rest of the room and you are done.

My thoughts exactly. I am a big fan of fabrics and textures. I always tell people that they can tack fabrics to the wall.

What happens when the fabric starts to fray? :)

A friend of mine came to my house once when it was in a mess, as I was moving in. I apologized to her for the messiness and she told me not to apologize, that she didn't come to see my house, she came to see me. Friends don't care if you are a dramatic decorator, friends don't care if the paint on your walls is the latest fad. If you have friends like that, you don't need enemies.

i never judge people by their messy house or what they have - just don't give me coffee in a dirty stained cup

No, but I nailed a meter maid against a stucco wall, does that count?

Donald C - yes, and the stucco shredded.

it Might work if you drilled a smaller hole first with a drill bit for metal & cement; not for wood. I've done that successfully for hanging decor on outdoor brick & in cement between the bricks. good luck.

All you need is a bottle of liquid starch, enough fabric to cover the wall, and an old credit card. Mix the starch with equal amount of water, then place dampened fabric in the starch, and then squeeze out most of starch mix. Hold fabric up to the wall & use the credit card to smooth out the wrinkles and air bubbles. Then just let it dry. When ready to remove, just pull it off, or spritz with a little water if its stubborn. Doesnt damage wall or paint.

In the olden days... Wives moving from base to base during war time..You definitely got an eye full of Wall Ugly, Easiest method since you wasted time and money on paint was to buy or dye a large flat sheet. Invest in two or three boxes of starch. Clean wall.. dip in starch and simply place sheet on wall. Smooth the beauty out and Vollah!!!! Hang a picture or three or four and you are off and running.. Have to move. Pull the sheet off the wall. Wash .. Dry.. Starch and hang in next abode..... If you have fresh paint allergy this could be an answer to a prayer................

People love looking at pictures. I have my family framed and displayed in a china cabinet. Nobody notices the wall behind it!

I love texture walls but I do them myself - I admit that this picture shown is ugly, very bad
      job done on it.

AWWWW No. That looks very tacky.... A really big mirror or mirror panels would look nicer.
They even have the hug floor mirrors that look better than a lot of different size mirror bunched up together

There's the wood alternative. Purchase engineered flooring (of your choice) with interlocking channels. Install horizontally up the wall. Use non-marring removable adhesive fasteners since the wall belongs to someone else. If there are outside corners, finish the edges with a piece of simple molding. Easy, affordable + easy to remove.

Elvis on black velvet on dogs playing poker are always a nice touch for a nasty looking wall.
