    Easy Do-It-Yourself Kitchen Upgrades

Considered to be the heart of the home, the kitchen is where your family likely spends the most time, and, it's one of the most important rooms to potential homebuyers. Therefor, it's worth investing in some upgrades in this space. Experts say even a minor kitchen facelift can earn you back more than 80% of the cost. Leslie Grete, the star of TLC's While You Were Out and Trading Spaces, offered the following easy kitchen upgrades that, together, cost less than $1,000!

Add a Fresh Coat of Paint

"This is probably the easiest and most affordable project you can take on as a homeowner to deliver the biggest bang for the buck," says Segrete. "For $40 a gallon you can buy a really good quality paint, and all you need is a couple of hours or a weekend and you can really transform your space."

    Refinish Your Cabinets

"If you're unhappy with your cabinets, you're going to be unhappy with your kitchen," says Segrete, who upgraded her own cabinets when she bought her home eight years ago. "The cabinets were looking a little worse for the wear so we cleaned them, lightly sanded them, re-stained them and they still look good today." Do this yourself and save over $500.

If your cabinets are still structurally sound, spruce them up with paint, or by resurfacing, which typically saves you 50% over what replacing the cabinets would cost.

Another quick fix is to update your faucet fixtures and door handles. "For a couple of hundred dollars cosmetic changes are super easy do-it-yourself projects that can completely change the look of your kitchen. Head over to your home center, grab a simple guide, which slides right on the cabinet's door-front. You'll know exactly where to drill and never make a mistake," says Segrete.

    Glam Up Your Lighting

New ceiling lights and chandeliers can go a long way and add that "wow" factor to an otherwise dull room. Segrete suggests installing a pendant light, which doesn't require the help of an electrician and can cost less than $50. "It screws right into the socket where the light bulb would go, then a canopy slides up and covers the high hat fixture. For a little money and no electrician you can change the look of your space." For an even more dramatic look, a chandelier sometimes does the trick. Ikea has trendy pieces for less than $50.

    Beautify Your Backsplash

Retiling your backsplash on your own can cost as little as $140 and "it doesn't have to be difficult," says Segrete. One of her favorite products for DIYers is the Bondera Tile Mat Set. "It's basically a super sticky contact adhesive that you put right on your existing backsplash. Tile directly to the Bondera, grout the same day, and you are done with that project." A whole roll of Bondera costs about $40.

    Opt for Laminate Countertops

Changing your countertops can seem like a daunting process, but Segrete says, not so. "If you're looking for something affordable that you can do yourself, think about laminate. It costs $10 to $40 per square foot about four times less than quartz or granite," she says. Your local home improvement store may be able to cut the laminate to the exact size you need for even added convenience.

If I ever buy a home again, I will buy one that is really old and inspect it better. The trash that has been put up in the last 15 yrs will never live through the 30 yr mortgage. I have seen so many people try to put in their own tile floors (grout popping up, tiles not matching, cracking, etc) and try to do other supposedly DYI projects and it is just junk. Looks good, then you move in and then find out they didn't use backerboard, or they didn't use TAPE on drywall or support under that new bathtub. Please people, if you do not know how to install PROPERLY do not do it, sell it and then let the next person have to tear the crap out!

I'm pretty good at renovation (re-did my entire house that's now mortgage free). I have walked throught new home and apartment construction and been horrified at new-wood 2x4s (like faux match sticks), glued-particle board used instead of plywood and construction that will decompose quickly. Folks, buy an old house and remodel. The new stuff is trash.

it all depends on the builder or the cheapskate import buying home owner. with the modern building codes and chooses in new materials homes are built much better now..

Thank God my husband;s daddy taught him how to woodwork, how to do basic electrical work and how to use TOOLS CORRECTLY...what ever happened to the art of men teaching their kids to use tools and fix things? Sad.
      • Just an opinion 2 months ago
Some still do also we teach that kind of stuff in scouts. Just went over tools and tool safety with our Bear Scouts last week. Going to be building a tool box with them as soon as they finish their birdhouses. Hopefully in the upcoming years we can teach them some more basic and some advance handyman types of work (fixing a leaky faucet, landscaping, etc...)
      • Nikki 2 months ago
WOMEN can learn this stuff, too, so they are not completely dependent on MEN to do handy work.
And the MEN can learn to Cook and Clean a house so they are not dependent on a Woman.
Then the Woman and Man can do these tasks together and share, or decide who is better
at a task and/or who has the most time to do a task. I hope Men and Women teach their Sons AND their Daughters these skills. The notion of "Men's" work versus "Women's" work is over.

        GOD BLESS US ALL !

Kitchen designer for 20 years...Every kitchen project tends to open up the door into another. Be careful. Most granite countertops installed run between $45 to $95 per square foot installed-complete! Unfortunately, you have to remove your existing countertops and sink first. Try not to destroy your cabinets. If you do, well, new cabinets in your immediate future. New sink and faucet a must...Did I mention, you might have to make sure your existing cabinets are level prior to the installation of the granite? Sometimes this can be quite annoying. Oh well...

Girls , We can accomplish remodeling too.. With the electric tool we have now days,, We do not need a heavy hammer we can not use a drill and use screws, And it so much easier. and with the power saws and sanders, For a a $100.00 dollars, we can have power tools that are easy to use.

I had three sons and I was able to teach all three how to build any thing they desired., Our first project was a roller pigeon bird cage.....

4ft x4ft x8ft,, we even made 9 bird nest,, ,, We got very creative. using some plexi-glass.. to make it able to see when they had all returned to there nest.. And even made feeder with Plexi-glases,, in the front to see when they needed more feed... It was a fun project. And Now since my boys are all adults,, they are good carpenter, And I am so proud of them,,, and so grateful my parents made me help when we were remodeling our home,I can now accomplish many projects, Oh I realize men do not want a woman showing then how to remodel.. But we all need some one to show us. When Daddy died my Mother and I remodeled her home. Our first major project was installing a larger 4 foot X 8 foot long window so she could look out in the yard, I could only find a window kit,, and had to assemble it our selfs. and After doing this as a week-end project.. and accomplishing the job. There was No stopping us girls. I would visit Momma and she always had new ideas of changes she would like to have. And since Momma now pasted away. I sure got good memories of out accomplishment. But Girls do not stop learning how to use those nice power tools, They make it so we can accomplish many things around our homes

An easy, free way to make a kitchen and bathroom look good--clear off the countertops, except for maybe the coffee maker.

It seems there are a lot of whiners out there.....And I'm a HUGE complainer.....My husband and I have done numerous DIY projects: tiling, flooring, painting, spackling, trim work, plumbing, minor electrical ---- you have to do your homework and use a little elbow grease. Painting is the EASIEST thing you can do to make your home look cleaner, fresher, and more enjoyable. Expect to push yourself and the rewards will be enjoyed for years. Physically demanding but worth the effort if you're willing to commit. (he cut, I prepped, tiled, and grouted/cleaned up), installed hardwood floor in kitchen (he ripped up old torn and mastic gooped linolium, I laid floor once for floating but he refused to put in trim, so I pulled up, stacked by rows with my son each floor board and then glued the floor down -- his idea even though I was the one with gooped up gloves/hands -- he did all the cutting).

Star, it sounds to me like you are sneaking in complaints within your story of your husbands failure to act as you would like him to.
      • SaiNt 2 months ago
Funny, my wife and I just did the same thing to our kitchen. For under $500 we retiled our kitchen floor. Removing the linolium is the hardest part of the entire project. We learned it is very easy to remove the remaining glue left on the concrete with water. Our youngest tripped and spilt the water in the bucket. The glue became melted butter awaiting the hot knife. I too cut the tiles and she placed them. Our youngest started grouting and then I assisted once all the measuring and cutting was finished. It was a two 1/2 day project and totally worth it. Its like we have a new home.

$40 a gallon for paint? Yes, that does definitely change the look of the room. Behr paint/primer which is excellent is only $29.38 gallon . And if you don't need the primer, it's even less. Don't forget changing or adding knobs and/or pulls isn't all that expensive either.

Top quality paint is 50-60.00 per gallon. Using that Home Depot stuff is fine for the Barrio
      • Angela 2 months ago
Hate to tell you, Skippy, but the professional painter you're paying 60.00 a gallon plus labor is paying almost 80.00 for a 5-gallon can (minus his 10% contractors discount of course! ) . And he's most likely getting it at Home Depot or Lowes! I should know, my family has been in the buisness for more than 25 years. (Please don't tell them I let out a "trade secret)

I am glad, Behr, came out with paint where one does not have to prime. I like refinishing furniture...so, with, Behr, that is one less step...I do hope you can use that paint on furniture....I have to check it out.

Laminate is quite easy. You go to the store, pick out the laminate you want from 100's of colors and designs.
They will cut out the sink hole for you.
You need to remove a few screws to get the old one off.

When I watch House Hunters on HGTV and hear realitors telling home buyers that dont like existing wall paper that it is an easy fix to take down I want to laugh. I realize everyone has a different experience but it seems the builder of our home LOVED wallpaper, the louder the better so as soon as we moved in I started trying to take it off. Only problem is they put it directly onto the drywall. I literally peeled it in teeny tiny pieces finally giving up and painting over what I couldnt get off. Word to the wise, if you can afford it pay someone to take it off, so wish I would have.

unless your cabinets are falling apart and old plaster is falling off the walls. then you have no choice but to redo entire room save those pennies... good thing my kitchen is small

Most people can actually do home improvement projects, they just THINK they can't. By myself I have tiled the kitchen floor, the bathroom floor, put in a new bathroom window, a tile backsplash, resurfaced the entire tub/shower surround and painted all the rooms plus many other lesser projects. I have had no professional training. Just take your time, follow directions and you will get better as you complete projects.

I used the peel and stick floor tiles you can pick up at a home improvement store to refresh my old and ugly counter tops. If you use them for your floor, they have a tendency to come up, but they have been perfect for the counters! They range from $0.40 to $2 and are super east to cut and lay. Just make sure you wipe down your counters with and alcohol based cleaner and let them dry before you apply the tiles.

A few touches go a long way. I live in a condo rental and the cabinet hardware had been painted over and dated hardware. I replaced them with updated hinges and new hardware. A new updated light fixture, installed some under the cabinet lighting and a fresh coat of high quality high gloss paint on walls and prviously painted cabints. I did pay to have the painting done - he was in the building working in a vacant apartment and I negotiated a good price to work in his down time. He took all the doors and drawers and lined them up in the empty unit. Since he removed all the hardware when he removed doors and drawers, I just had him install new hardware. I did not tell him ahead of time I was changing hardware - it makes no difference.

Painting is easy, but remember decreasing is important. Then spend the extra money to buy a paint with a primer built in and you will have mores success. Changing your electric covers can make a big difference as well. If you don't have the money to do new appliances do one at a time as you can afford it. Start with the fridge because it will make the biggest statement. My friend tiled their countertop and it looks great. New cabinet hardware is also inexpensive but makes a huge difference.

if you don't have the skills to do these "simple" projects, you're going to have a huge disaster on your hands - better to wait until you can pay professionals in my opinion

Ahhhhh ha ha ha ha ... refinish your cabinets ? yourself ? ha ha ha ha oh my ha ha ha ha ... I am sure the new buyers will appreciate your amateur work. Ahhhh ha ha ha ha ha.

Sellers: If your municipality requires permits for any electrical and plumbing - get them. Buyers: Permits are public record and can be checked for free. Peace of mind at closing. Granite/hardwood are cold and increase your heating bill and break Pyrex. Whatever you do, just do it RIGHT. Dropping contracts after inspection is a hassle.
