Lead in Lipstick: 10 Worst Brands, Better Alternatives

Hazardous to your health? Hazardous to your health? Could a pretty pucker be the kiss of death? According to Reuters, about 400 lipsticks recently tested by the FDA contain traces of lead. In 2007, the Campaign for Safe Cosmetics ran its own tests on 33 red lipsticks and found that one-third exceeded the FDA's limit for lead in candy. Lead levels have gone up since then.

The FDA pushed back in its latest report stating that: "Lipstick, as a product intended for topical use with limited absorption, is ingested only in very small quantities. We do not consider the lead levels we found in the lipsticks to be a safety concern." However, Stacy Malkan, of the Campaign for Safe Cosmetics disagrees. "We know that ingestion of lipstick happens," she told Reuters. She also points out that lead accumulates in the body over time.

The Campaign for Safe Cosmetics is particularly concerned about lead exposure for children and pregnant women. The CDC's Advisory Committee for Childhood Lead Poisoning Prevention recently stated that there is no safe lead level for children. Lead poisoning causes a wide range of problems from low IQ and slowed grown in children to memory loss, mood disorders, and miscarriage in adults.

The FDA found the highest levels in lipsticks made by Procter & Gamble (Cover Girl brand), L'Oreal (L'Oreal and Maybelline brands), and Revlon. The lipsticks containing the most lead (measured in parts per million) are:

    1. Maybelline Color Sensational, Pink Petal (7.9 ppm)

    2. L'Oreal Colour Riche, Volcanic, (7.0 ppm)

    3. NARS Semi-Matte, Red Lizard (4.93 ppm)

    4. Cover Girl Queen Collection, Ruby Remix, (4.92 ppm)

    5. Nars Semi-Matte, Funny Face (4.89 ppm)

    6. L'Oreal Colour Riche, Tickled Pink (4.45 ppm)

    7. L'Oreal Intensely Moisturizing Lipcolor, Heroic (4.41 ppm)

    8. Cover Girl Continuous Color, Warm Brick (4.28 ppm)

    9. Maybelline Color Sensational, Mauve Me (4.23 ppm)

    10. Stargazer Lipstick, #103 (4.12 ppm)

California, which has the nation's most stringent laws about lead in consumer products, has imposed a safety limit of 5.0 ppm for lipstick. If you are concerned about contaminants in your lipstick or other cosmetics, the Environmental Working Group rates over 1000 cosmetic lip products on its searchable database. Because there are thousands of lipsticks on the market, the Campaign for Safe Cosmetics says its impossible to test every one and the best thing you can do is support an outright ban on lead. However, here are 11 products they have found to be lead-free.

I've known better than to waste my money on L'oreal or the like. I use Physicians Formula and for some reason stores aren't stocking it anymore. They say it's because it won't sell....I wonder why. I know that stuff is great for your face- I never ever buy anything else. I'm looking to buy in bulk online now if anybody knows of a good website that sells it!

WHY is lead in lipstick at all?
    • Jen  •  1 month 12 days ago
I get my lipstick for a little over a dollar by N.Y.C. but don't know if they contain lead. I may need to resarch this. I used to own a famous brand name makeup "studio" but they are not on this list. I don't spend a lot of cosmetics now because I have learned better and do pick up a copy of the book by Paula Burgeon "Don't Go to the Cosmetics Counter Without Me". She has tested many of the department store brands ingredients and have comparisions as to which work, and you would be surprised that the ones that cost the least are just as good if not better than those that cost the most.

Don't wear Lipstick. There are very few of my friends that I have thought looked better with than without lipstick. Guys, chime in, isn't lipstick so 1986?
      • lawlerskates 1 month 8 days ago
Guys won't come to an article about lipstick LOL unless they just want to make fun of ya. But yes I agree. Leave lipstick for costume parties/halloween/fancy occasions- but everyday wear is just like you're addicted to the color. You can't see yourself as just "you" which happens to be extremely unattractive to guys. All natural is the way to go!

they need to use particular dyes and it is in those dyes that trace amounts of lead can be found.

We ban lead in paints because children MIGHT put paint chips in their mouths, yet we put lead into lipstick which women will DEFINITELY put into their mouths, when they lick their lips. There needs to be accountability and more stringent inspection of products. This sort of thing should NEVER happen, yet it happens all too often.

In the US, everyone is free to import any product they like. There is no restriction on the importation phase. FDA argues that it is the resposibility of teh importer to make sure the products are safe.
In other countries you have to get a Sanitary certifiation before you can even attempt to import the product and you have to provide at least a copy of that certificate to the customes authorities to import the products.

And, most of the 11 lipsticks that do not contain lead are made by companies that DO NOT test on animals. Hmmmm..... makes you question, what is all this animal testing about anyway!? We all have to make an effort to use products that are not tested on animals.

Oh great now I have lead in my lips cause I have used L'Oreal lipstick for years. I'm sure so many products are killing us slowly more than we know. That's why we have all these cancers, diseases come up with no clue where they came from.

Make sure you look for the circle U on your groceries and other products as thats the jew kosher sign which indicates to their fellow jewish sociopathic rat people that the product doesn't contain poison, products that do contain poison don't have a jewish kosher symbol on it and are intended for the goyim non jewish cattle to consume and die from.

There's been reported links to cancer from lead, and Mom grew up in the 'bright red lips' era - and died from cancer. Wondered if the lipstick was a contributing factor, this was back in the 1950 - 60 decades when lead wasn't a concern yet.

Lets add fluoride to the list. It was used to make atomic bombs in the 40's, used to kill insects and is a waste product of the phosphate fertilizer industry.

I don't see how something that you put on your lips is not ingested.

So the lip stick is toxic, nail polish, and who knows what other product probably are.
