Why Does This Man Live in a Boeing 727 Hidden in the Oregon Woods? the Answer Will Surprise You

This might be the ultimate upcycling project: Engineer Bruce Campbell bought a retired Boeing 727 aircraft for $220,000, and turned it into his home.

Parked on 10 wooded acres in a suburban area outside of Portland, the commercial airliner has its own driveway and is equipped with electricity, water, and sewage. But although the 67-year-old has been living in it for years, the plane is still a work in progress: only one of the bathrooms is fully functional and the kitchen consists only of a few hastily thrown together appliances. Bruce is also working on restoring some of the jet's original interior elements, including the seating and the lights.

According to a Reuters article, Bruce is part of a small group of people around the world who have transformed retired aircrafts into living spaces or other creative projects. "[The Aircraft Fleet Recycling Association] is happy to see aircraft fuselages re-purposed in a range of creative ways," AFRA spokesman Martin Todd told Reuters. "We would want them to be recovered and be re-used in an environmentally sustainable fashion."
