Throughout this election campaign I had hoped that one candidate would have thought about the effect and outcome of what this recession is doing to the children in this country.
I can not be the only one that is seriously concerned as to how the homelessness, joblessness, the increased suicide rate and the everyday stresses that the parents of today are facing.
Yet, not one politician has ever mentioned that we should be doing whatever is needed to give these kids a sense of security.
I have seen the effects on my oldest granddaughter. She is constantly worried that Dad is not going to be able to pay the rent. He has been ill this year and has missed quite of bit of work and is always running to playing catch up.
I have tried to reassure her, even as my own fears grow.
I understand that the candidates seem to concentrate on the "voting" public but these kids are really unable to cope with what is happening around them. I seriously doubt the parents are coping that well.
Being a single parent myself in the 1970's, way before it was socially acceptable, I know the struggle that these families are facing. I never received child support and had to work 2 and 3 jobs just to keep a roof over our heads and food on the table. It was exhausting. You never get a chance to take a deep breath.
Are they developing any coping skills what so ever. Will they always be anxious. The stress I am sure is affecting their health. Yet, no one seems concerned. This disturbs me in ways that I can't quite put into words.
My wish is that someone will read this and realize that it should be in the forefront of out thoughts each and every day. Additionally, if each and everyone of us would just take the time to write our representatives and let them know that this matter should be openly discussed when they return to Washington.
Please help. Thank you.
