Cop Literally Gives the Shirt Off His Back to Homeless Man

Officer Carlos Ramos of the NYPD knows his job is to help people, and he does it any way he can.

When he recently saw a homeless man freezing on the streets of New York, he didn't hesitate to offer the man the sweatshirt he was wearing.

The 29-year-old police officer was sent to Manhattan's East Side on Friday morning to look for suspicious packages or activity. That's where he found Robert William on the street, shivering in 23-degree cold.

William was barefoot (his boots had gotten soaked) and had taken his shirt off to wrap around his feet.

"I saw he was in need and it was my job to help him," Ramos told the New York Daily News. "It was a very cold day, because I was very cold even bundled up."

William at first turned down his generous offer - he was concerned about the cop staying warm - but eventually accepted it.

"I've helped out other people, especially when it's cold," said Ramos. "A nice cup of coffee, a tea, whatever seems appropriate… always wanted to help those that need help, protect the city, protect the country."
