How to become an Automotive Electrician

Do you enjoy cars, computers and electronics then becoming an Automotive Electrician may be the perfect career for you. In the past this job involved setting up simple wiring to connect starter motors and lights however cars are now highly computerised and this has resulted in the field becoming very specialised.
There are many specialised fields that you could choose from if you became an Automotive Electrician such as:
• Sound system installation technician. The days are past when music systems were very basic and modern day fancy sound systems need to be installed correctly for sound to flow properly and for the cars power not to be drained.
• Security system installer. As with sound systems, security systems have to be installed correctly to insure that the cars power is not drained. Also if they are not installed correctly an unhappy vehicle owner may find that their vehicles breaks down for no apparent reason.
• Vehicle computer technician. Most Vehicles are computerised now and as with any computer things can go wrong with the computer. These technicians need to know how to reinstall, reset and reprogram the vehicles computer.
• Automated car doors and automated windows technician. Certain Auto Electrical technicians specialise in working purely on the repair of automated car locks and windows.
• Standard Auto Electrician. If you work in an auto electrical shop you may be required to be able to do all of the above. In addition you will need to know how to rewire a vehicle.

In California you can train at the Universal Technical Institute or Wyotech.
In Colorado you can train at Westwood College or IntelliTec Colleges.
