Over the course of this past year, I've dished out a lot of beauty advice. I want to focus on a few that stand out to help ourselves in 2014 to look our best, help our environment, learn something new and save time - all very good resolutions, don't you think?
1. Dry skin
My recent article on dry skin caused a bit of controversy because of the inclusion of Vaseline. People still sit on two sides of the fence on that one. Nevertheless, these winter skin tips definitely help with this very itchy winter many have been dealing with.
- use night creams for the rest of your ever loving life
- remember prevention and protection are just as important as hydration
- drink a lot of water
- use coconut oil, olive oil, and vaseline to moisturize and/or protect skin from water loss
Add more minutes to your social calendar by decreasing the amount of time it takes you to get ready. This one is super easy. Pick one item out of your makeup bag, one you use regularly, that you could do without. Next, when shopping for cosmetics, look for items that double or triple as other products. An example of this would be a powder foundation which can double as a concealer. Here are some helpful hints and tips for more in that area of time management and developing a faster routine for applying makeup.
3. Find texture in your life
Texture is certainly a fantastic hair trend that we have been seeing all year and it won't be stopping soon. How can you add texture? One way is through texture sprays and spray waxes. If you have even the slightest wave in your hair: spray, tousle, flip, and scrunch to your heart's desire using a spray wax. If you have stick straight hair, try poof-ing the crown area with a texture spray or powder, secure that with a bobby pin, then do a fishtail braid down the side. It will create the illusion of texture. Too much wave in your hair? Rock that wave with some taming gels from Use Me! Products or DevaCurl, both of which are made for the curly girls. Read more of my tips for texture.
4.Let me hear you say it, "I will not damage my lovely locks as much this year."
The first thing to do is to start conditioning treatments a day before and then a few days after your color and/or bleaching service. Try something with keratin in it, such as Joica K-pak or Enjoy's Hair Mask. Both keep damage to a minimum.
Also, try curling your hair with a flat iron. Give yourself an hour to learn this and throw out that old curling iron. Curling irons send most of the heat to the ends of your hair, when in reality it's the hair closest to your roots that needs the most heat. Also there is not much tension with curling irons, whereas with a flat iron you can add tension and you've got a curl that will stay all day! Adding tension also means you don't need the temperature as high, alleviating hair stress from too much heat.
5. Save the world... one hair or skin product at a time.
Green up your beauty routine and help the planet one product at a time.
- Try buying products from the farmers market.
- Use products that are refillable, reusable, or biodegradable.
- Look for products in BPA-free bottles and check out companies who are "green."
6. Look at everyday beauty from another perspective.
When it comes down to it, no amount of beauty tips and tricks is going to make you feel good on the outside unless you already have a positive outlook on the inside. So this year, while still giving beauty tips to help one look and feel good in 2014, I can definitely say that it is absolutely important that we each feel beautiful on the inside as well. Are you rolling your eyes yet? Here's my thoughts on inward beauty from a previous article. And in the middle of all of it is this moral-- the beauty inside each of us is what creates the best beauty on the outside for the world to see!
