I'm not sure when the first bob made its debut, perhaps during the roaring 20's but each recent generation has had a version. In the 1970s, girls and women wore the Dorothy Hamill; in the 1960s Twiggy sported a smooth version. Personally, I fell in love with the bob when Jenny McCarthy made the bob hairstyle look so hot--again! Today, I've sworn off the impetuous haircut. I love it, at first, but growing it out takes forever--and I do mean forever! Since long hair on post-30 women is now socially acceptable, there's no way I'm cutting all my tresses off anytime soon.
So what's the answer to my bob obsession? Rock a faux bob! I found several blogs like ...love Maegan and oodles of online photos that gave me great tips for my faux bob. It's pretty simple, if you regularly curl your shoulder to long length hair a faux bob only requires just a few extra steps.
I recommend washing and conditioning your hair first with volumizing products. If you have the time, let your hair air dry for less frizz. Here's a step-by-step hair tutorial for a faux bob.
- Brush your hair and make sure it is completely dry; it needs to hold and keep some curl. Heat your hot rollers or a wide-barrel curling iron, if you prefer. I like my velvet rollers, they keep my hair from frying! (Yes, I'm addicted to hot rollers.)
- Section off your hair with your fingers, right at the forehead. For longer hair, place the hot roller, (carefully, it's hot!) at the middle point of the hair section. Wind the bottom part of the section around the roller then roll it up to your head. Cinch it tightly with a clip.
- Curl your whole head of hair, using the back and under method. I use a mirror to make sure I didn't miss any sections or have strays. It does not have to be perfect. The results matter, not the roller arrangement.
- Allow your hair to cool completely and don't spray it yet. Spraying hot hair dulls the shine.
- Remove the hot rollers and clips but don't brush the curls. I lean over and shake my curls loose. Shaking the curls creates even bigger curls. If you have super fine hair, go ahead and spray the hair with a volumizing hair spray.
- Next, I arranged the part with my fingers. I love a flirty faux bob with a waterfall of bangs. So pretty! I gathered the bottom 1/4 of the hair up and made a loose ponytail with an elastic. I flipped the ponytail under the bottom of my hair and secured it with bobby pins.
It took at least six to keep it in place but I love this look. My hair's not quite long enough to get a lot of luxurious volume but I'm working on it. I finished my faux bob hairstyle with a finishing spray and I was ready for romantic evening out.
