How to find beauty trends that work for you

Trends in the beauty world come and go fairly quickly. Sometimes, however, there are a few that stick around, and for good reason. Instead of spending money on sure-to-end trends like neon eyeshadow, crystal-studded false lashes, or strangely-tinted extensions, pick up on the smaller trends that are not only interesting but also more resistant to the usually inevitable fad expiration date. What makes a trend more likely to escape this expiration date? Usability, affordability, and quality of the product. These four following products pass the test.

    Matte Polish

Yeah, we've all seen the Crackle polish that does weird things when covered with a top coat, but would you wear that to an interview? Probably not. In steps matte polish that gives a manicure a sueded finish. While not super cheap, a bottle of Chanel's Limited-Edition Top Coat Velvet can be worn over any regular nail polish. It's $26 a bottle, but only one coat is necessary. An added bonus is that because it isn't a shiny finish, dings in a manicure are less noticeable, so perhaps time between salon manicures could be stretched, and that would certainly justify the price tag.

    Sephora's Shimmer Sheets

I have oily skin. So I really should buy stock in blotting papers. But what I have found is that while these blotting papers do remove oil, they also remove makeup, so I spend more time reapplying or re-powdering than I would like, and I generally just stop removing the oil. Enter Sephora's Shimmer Sheets. At $16 a set, they're a real deal because they include three sets of 30 papers: one of traditional blotters and two that are lightly tinted to leave a bit of color behind when used.

    Talika Skin Retouch

This product is simply amazing. I have decent skin, but it also has days where it looks rough or uneven in texture. Talika's Skin Retouch brushes on (it's a clear liquid) and seems to really blur the imperfections in my skin's texture. I wear it under my powder foundation, and I can't believe how much smoother my skin looks. At $49 a bottle it may seem a little steep, but it's truly magical, and I don't think I could feel as confident without it.

Instead of bending to the will of ridiculous beauty trends, find what works for you and stick with it. So neon green eyeshadow really works for you? Go for it! Wear it until you find a color you like better! But instead of spending hundreds of dollars on fads, spend a little time researching and finding what you like, rather than what you're supposed to like, and spend what you're comfortable spending. Hey, not everybody looks good in crystal-studded false lashes, believe it or not.
