4 Types of Wrinkles and How to Treat Them

    By Shannon R., SELF magazine

Aging may be inevitable but there are some things you can do to help slow down the clock a bit (at least when it comes to your skin!). Here are the most common types of wrinkles and how to treat them (and even prevent them in some cases).

What are the most common types of wrinkles?
According to a study published in the International Journal of Cosmetic Science (2006), researchers at the University Hospital of Liege, Belgium determined that there are four distinctly different types of wrinkles that you'll (eventually) have to face.

    1. Atrophic Crinkling Rhytids - fine lines on the face that are almost parallel to each other.
Where they occur: They show up on different areas of the face and body but tend to disappear when skin is stretched transversally (this just means they shift when your body posture changes). These wrinkles are associated with loss of elasticity.
What you can do: Since these wrinkles are due to the loss of collagen, you need to protect your skin by using sunscreen. You can also use moisturizers to temporarily plump the skin and diminish the appearance of these fine lines.

    2. Permanent Elastic Creases - Crease lines in the skin that become increasingly permanent over time, especially with sun exposure.
Where they occur: They show up most frequently on on the cheeks, the upper lip and the base of the neck.
What you can do: Sun exposure and smoking make this type of wrinkle worse. Don't smoke, minimize sun exposure and use a sunscreen to prevent this kind of wrinkling.

    3. Dynamic Expression Lines - Wrinkles that are caused by facial muscle movement.
Where they occur: Commonly referred to as frown (or smile!) lines and crows feet.
What you can do: These wrinkles respond best to Botox or other similar injectable wrinkle treatments.

    4. Gravitational Folds - As the name implies, these lines are due to the effects of gravity and become increasingly obvious as skin begins to fold and sag.
Where they occur: The location of these wrinkles is related to the thickness of skin. While I would have thought this means that thicker skin shows more folds, surprisingly the researchers said that a plumper face may show fewer gravity folds than a lean face.
What you can do: Cosmetic surgery (like face lifts) are the most effective at removing these kinds of wrinkles.

    Bottom Line
My best skin-saving advice is to minimize sun exposure, wear sunscreen and don't smoke. Moisturizers can help temporarily "fill in" and plump wrinkles but if you are looking for more permanent results you may want to consider cosmetic procedures like Botox or face lifts.

Cases in point: Joan Rivers, Michael Jackson, Dolly Parton. The more they do it, the weirder they look.

I suggest going to a crematory to see what becomes of the body you've worried over your whole life. Only then can you see what you look like has little meaning in the scheme of life. Ashes are ashes and that's all you will be. Worry about your soul, not your face.

I love this......and agree. A clean or clear soul will put a glow on your face that time cannot take off

wrinkles are a natural occurrence in life, all we can do is try not to worsen it.
botox? face lift? no, thank you.

I would rather see a beautiful face with wrinkles than an odd puffy alien face with botox. The Europeans do not botox or face lift like the women do here and they look their age with no consequences.

Seriously, an entire article that says do to Botox injections to get rid of wrinkles? How about hyaluronic acid masks, colagen, mild chemical peels... nothing?

The bottom line is be sure you are getting lots of antioxidents like vitamin C-that builds collagin, E, selenium, and a touch of sulfur in your diet. Don't smoke, drink too much booze, or get too much sun-but SOME sun is good for you, and don't put garbagy chemical-laden lotions on your face, make your own lotions made with plant-based oils!

well, I did not learn a single thing promised for getting rid of wrinkles! Just a long ad for surgery / botox! disgraceful Yahoo.... pathetic and misleading

I expected more. Should have known better. I was hoping for information on the different treatments for wrinkles or other skin problems like retinol or scrubs or peels. Not "if you have wrinkles, get surgery". It seems like a kid wrote this piece.

How about an article that addresses our ridiculous and unhealthy obsessiveness with our appearance? An article that encourages us to accept the natural aging process and find the real lasting beauty beauty within? An article that encourages us to take the $$$ that we would spend on vain attempts to turn back the clock and donate to a wonderful charity or put the $$$ to use in some other helpful way? Hoping for a time when we also find beauty in the lines-they are evidence of a life lived and emotions felt!

Really Shannon? You suggest injecting your face with poison rather than drinking lots of water, eating healthy, and washing/moisturzing your face every day? Are you 15, or just have the mentality of one?

yeah, the types of wrinkles that we get were the only thing informative about this article. Anyone can tell us to go get a facelift......sounded like a good article but it really wasn't worth reading.

Consider cleaning your gut! Exercise and eat clean food... oh that leaves out 3/4 of the processed junk in the grocery store.
