5 Ways to Look More Rested

Skimping on sleep and waking up with dull skin, puffy eyes, and dark circles is never a good look. In a perfect world, it would be awesome if we could all get the doctor recommended eight hours of beauty sleep every night, but that's not always, if ever, possible. However, you don't have to let don't let your face pay the price for your lack of zzzs. Here are five beauty tricks to help you look well rested (even when you're not).

1. Exfoliate. This is a super easy way to create a rosy glow (or at least look a bit more alive). Why? Exfoliation helps to get rid of any dead skin cells that may be dulling the top layer of your skin and allows for fresh, new cells to be exposed. It also increases your blood circulation, bringing more oxygen and nutrients to the skin cells which actually improves the color. Try an exfoliating facial mask such as GlamGlow Tingling & Exfoliating Mud Mask, $69, sephora.com.

2. Try something minty. We all know that it s great in tea, but did you know that this invigorating herb also helps to stimulate blood circulation? "Using mint as an ingredient in a skincare product can increase mental alertness for a morning pick-me-up and instantly brighten dull, tired skin," Renee Rouleau, esthetician and founder of Renee Rouleau Skin Care, told shape.com. Just use a mint-infused cleanser after rolling out of bed. Origins Zero Oil Deep Pore Cleanser, $21, sephora.com

3. Invest in a good illuminator. It may be one of those products that you pick up and scratch your head over, but luminizers are one of the smartest beauty products around. According to BellaSugar.com, luminizers contain ground-up mica and other shiny minerals. The mineral dust refracts light, so when applied to the skin, it helps to soften problem spots and highlight the areas that light hits. It can be used to play up cheekbones and make skin look dewy and healthy (Which is exactly the kind of look you want when you've had less than six hours of shut eye.) To use, mix with or apply over your concealer underneath the eyes, along the top of your cheekbones, and underneath your eyebrows. Sonia Kashuk Chic Luminosity Highlighter Stick, $10.99, target.com

4. Drink lots of water. If you feel tired, don't reach for the caffeine. Instead, start guzzling water. According to drweil.com, caffeine acts as a diuretic and causes your body to lose water. Lack of hydration will make your skin look dry, tight, and flaky which is never attractive. You can also give your skin an additional shot of moisture by using a high power serum. Kate Somerville Quench Hydrating Face Serum, $65, sephora.com

5. Prep while you sleep. If you regularly scrimp on your eight hours, invest in skincare products that work extra hard while you sleep to give you the rested look you desire. Estee Lauder's Advanced Night Repair ($62, macys.com) tackles visible signs of aging while you sleep so you can wake up with longer looking skin.
