6 Retro Hairstyles that Are Hot Right Now

Does anyone else think hairstyles have gotten ... boring over the years? Everywhere I look, I see girls sporting Kim Kardashian waves, or Jennifer Aniston's pin straight hair. Even after this bob trend hit Hollywood hard, nothing really changed. I still see a ton of waves and straight looks ... only shorter. Zzzz.

Personally, I never understood this obsession with looking like a beach bum. I've always loved these vintage hairstyles better, so I get really excited when I see celebs try retro looks, like Katy Perry did at the VMA's last year. I'll confess, I even went through my own Betty Page phase in my late teens -- self-cut bangs and all. (Wondering what era you were meant to be born in? Take this quiz to find out.)

While I would love to go back in time to see these hairstyles in action, no genius has been able to invent a time machine … yet. But you can bring the retro to the present with these how-tos. They're super easy to follow. The only hard part? Not standing out in a crowd of tousled waves and straight layers:

    The Glam Curls
Kim Kardashian channels the 1940s with this classic Hollywood glam look.

    1. Begin with damp hair. Apply a thickening mousse to your hair and distribute evenly.
    2. Create a deep side part and blow dry your hair using a round brush.
    3. Next, divide your hair into small sections. Start five inches from the base of your hair, and curl each section with a 1-inch curling iron. Carefully slide out the iron, clip each curl, and allow them to cool.

    The Faux Bob

This retro faux bob on Lauren Conrad exudes the elegant sophistication of the 1920s.

    1. Apply a small amount of a thickening cream to damp hair and blow dry.
    2. Create a side part and separate your hair into small sections.
    3. Curl each section with a 1-inch curling iron. Carefully slide out the iron, clip each curl, and allow them to cool for maximum hold.

    The Beehive

Even though Rihanna's beehive is a throwback to the 1960s, it still looks fresh and sophisticated.

    1. Distribute a small amount of styling cream throughout your hair, and make a horizontal part, from one ear to another. The front part creates your face-framing fringe.
    2. Divide the back section of your hair into two layers -- top and bottom. Brush the top layer forward so you can work just with the bottom half. Take the bottom half and create a full bun as high up on your head as possible. Secure with bobby pins.

    The Teased Pony

Reese Witherspoon's high ponytail is a fun and easy style from the '50s, and is best created with second day hair. (This style also works with shorter hair. Just buy a clip-in hairpiece or extensions from your local beauty supply store.)

    1. Apply volumizing product to your hair.
    2. Lightly tease your hair at the crown of your head. This adds height to this simple pony.
    3. Brush hair back and secure into a high ponytail with an elastic.
    4. Wrap a small section of hair around the elastic to cover it and pin it into place underneath the base of the ponytail.

    The Pin Up Roll

Anne Hathaway combines two classic elements to create this elegant updo: a French twist and '40s pin-up girl fringe.

    1. Apply a volumizing product to wet hair, and blow dry your hair with a round brush.
    2. Pull out a medium-sized piece of hair from your bang area. Using a hot roller, roll back the piece of hair on a diagonal. Bobby pin it to set.
    3. As the roller cools, tease your hair at the crown, and gently brush your hair back over the crown into a low ponytail.

    BRBRThe Sexy Side Part

Charlize Theron's '20s-inspired updo looks difficult to style, but is actually really easy.

    1. Start with day old, unwashed hair. Apply a shine serum to your hair and distribute evenly.
    2. Create a side part, and section off a 5-inch piece of hair from the thicker side of the part, starting with the hair around your face.
    3. Pull hair (except for the five inch section) behind your ears, and secure it into a low bun at the nape of your neck.

I personally like the Rita Hayworth hairdo's. I'm 68 and refuse to wear "old lady" styles. No blue hair in short perm for me, thanks! I keep my hair colored to my natural color (reddish blonde) and wear it long. I always set my hair with hot rollers before the dances that I attend each week. I get lots of compliments on not only my hair, but my appearance. I don't have much money, but I do have a lot of fun! And, for some reason, I seem to attract men in their 50's. Go figure!

You go girl. Way to go. We're not assembly line type gals.I just keep my hair color too (blonde). I wash my hair, let it dry. keep it long and straight.Put my B B ball cap on to keep the sun off my face. Also to keep the sun out of my eyes. My eyes are green sometimes blue and are light sensitive.I do the old time pony tail too.

You gals are great. I am 1 and refuse to go gray. I color my hair black like it always and wear it long. I also refuse to wear old ladys clothes. You feel younger.

Yeah right! Let's take average women and average moms and see if they can walk around with hair do's like that! I dont know about anyone else, but if we all had faces and money like them to wear the hair that would be different....but in reality we don't! Lets get real here...not fake like Hollywood!

A lot of the clip-ons, even done professionally, are just too noticeable imo.

I remember the horrors of nightly bobby pinning or rolling and then sleeping in the things. I remember hair nets, perms, and breaking hair from too much teasing. I remember sitting under hair dryers and scarves wrapped around rollers at the grocery store. Pain in the you know what. No thanks!
      • Hattie D 3 months ago
You sure brought back some memories. Don't know how we slept in those miserable rollers.

Every time I see a beehive, I think of my aunt's hair. That look sends chills through my body .

Nothing looks better than clean, shiny, healthy hair with a really good cut that's left to it's natural texture and shape. A little shine serum can tame the frizz and flyaways, but other than that I think natural is best. Pony tails - high, low or in the middle - can be great for longer hair on days you want something easy or a different look. Love the jeweled clips and pony tail holders too to add a little sparkle.

I haven't seen anyone in the street with any of these dos. Except maybe the last one and that just looks like messy pulled back hair. These hairdos are to hard to do.

I've worn bangs forever.....I don't care what the current styles are. I have a high forehead and have to cover it somehow......mine are cute and stylish for me, and that is all that matters.

These aren't "everyday" hairstyles you can wear to work and they do take time to perfect. Just give me a Chi and I'm ready in about 5 minutes. Leave these styles for a special event.

Oh pleez One day it's not your mothers!!! - jeans, sweater, perfume you name it. Now it's hairstyles! This young generation has no talent, no imaginations yet you refuse to admit that you are using all the 60 & 70's styles whether it's clothes or hair. YES IT IS YOUR MOTHERS

Personally I like people in general that dress retro spending time and effort on their appearance.

I am glad this article speaks about this resurgence of taste and style. I don't know of a single person in the retro scene on the east coast or west coast that isn't happy, doing very well, and otherwise enjoying life. Most are very sucessful in their given professions and live a great lifestyle.

Most if not all are middle class and have simply made a commitment to take the time to iron their clothes and fix their hair everyday. (Okay maybe not when they are working around their house...LOL)

You can have your ripped up jeans and hairstyles that look like you just got out of bed.

As far as taking the time to fix your hair and iron your clothes; how did millions upon millions of working class people do it for at least 100 years prior to the 1970's? They all did not go to a salon, dry cleaners everyday, or spend a lot of money, they learned how to do it for themselves.

On line has a ton of resources to help you look good without breaking the bank.

I get more compliments when I go out and have had more fun over the years than I can count or do justice to on this comment page. Try dressing up and fixing your hair in a retro style, the results may suprise you.

I have let my hair grow out to see what color I am, WOW I love it silver with white streaks in the front and a beautiful dark brown in the back, shoulder length bob that I can pull back into a pony tail . I get alot of complements from men on being natural, not bad for 60. As for these styles they are not real neither are movie stars . Be yourself and enjoy life.
