Does anyone else think hairstyles have gotten ... boring over the years? Everywhere I look, I see girls sporting Kim Kardashian waves, or Jennifer Aniston's pin straight hair. Even after this bob trend hit Hollywood hard, nothing really changed. I still see a ton of waves and straight looks ... only shorter. Zzzz.
Personally, I never understood this obsession with looking like a beach bum. I've always loved these vintage hairstyles better, so I get really excited when I see celebs try retro looks, like Katy Perry did at the VMA's last year. I'll confess, I even went through my own Betty Page phase in my late teens -- self-cut bangs and all. (Wondering what era you were meant to be born in? Take this quiz to find out.)
While I would love to go back in time to see these hairstyles in action, no genius has been able to invent a time machine … yet. But you can bring the retro to the present with these how-tos. They're super easy to follow. The only hard part? Not standing out in a crowd of tousled waves and straight layers:
The Glam Curls
Kim Kardashian channels the 1940s with this classic Hollywood glam look.
1. Begin with damp hair. Apply a thickening mousse to your hair and distribute evenly.
2. Create a deep side part and blow dry your hair using a round brush.
3. Next, divide your hair into small sections. Start five inches from the base of your hair, and curl each section with a 1-inch curling iron. Carefully slide out the iron, clip each curl, and allow them to cool.

The Faux Bob
This retro faux bob on Lauren Conrad exudes the elegant sophistication of the 1920s.
1. Apply a small amount of a thickening cream to damp hair and blow dry.
2. Create a side part and separate your hair into small sections.
3. Curl each section with a 1-inch curling iron. Carefully slide out the iron, clip each curl, and allow them to cool for maximum hold.

The Beehive
Even though Rihanna's beehive is a throwback to the 1960s, it still looks fresh and sophisticated.
1. Distribute a small amount of styling cream throughout your hair, and make a horizontal part, from one ear to another. The front part creates your face-framing fringe.
2. Divide the back section of your hair into two layers -- top and bottom. Brush the top layer forward so you can work just with the bottom half. Take the bottom half and create a full bun as high up on your head as possible. Secure with bobby pins.

The Teased Pony
Reese Witherspoon's high ponytail is a fun and easy style from the '50s, and is best created with second day hair. (This style also works with shorter hair. Just buy a clip-in hairpiece or extensions from your local beauty supply store.)
1. Apply volumizing product to your hair.
2. Lightly tease your hair at the crown of your head. This adds height to this simple pony.
3. Brush hair back and secure into a high ponytail with an elastic.
4. Wrap a small section of hair around the elastic to cover it and pin it into place underneath the base of the ponytail.

The Pin Up Roll
Anne Hathaway combines two classic elements to create this elegant updo: a French twist and '40s pin-up girl fringe.
1. Apply a volumizing product to wet hair, and blow dry your hair with a round brush.
2. Pull out a medium-sized piece of hair from your bang area. Using a hot roller, roll back the piece of hair on a diagonal. Bobby pin it to set.
3. As the roller cools, tease your hair at the crown, and gently brush your hair back over the crown into a low ponytail.

BRThe Sexy Side Part
Charlize Theron's '20s-inspired updo looks difficult to style, but is actually really easy.
1. Start with day old, unwashed hair. Apply a shine serum to your hair and distribute evenly.
2. Create a side part, and section off a 5-inch piece of hair from the thicker side of the part, starting with the hair around your face.
3. Pull hair (except for the five inch section) behind your ears, and secure it into a low bun at the nape of your neck.
