7 Hairstyles That'll Make You Love Dirty Hair

When I think of really dirty hair, the first thing that comes to mind is ... camping. You're stuck in the middle of nowhere without any bathrooms or showers which means you've got dirty, smelly hair that hasn't been washed in days. Sounds like an embarrassing story waiting to unfold, like one of these beauty/fashion malfunctions.

Most girls would be miserable and want desperately to go home and take a shower. But I've got a secret: This is the reason why I love camping. It gives me an excuse to try out these "dirty hair" hairstyles. In case you didn't know, dirty hair is able to hold a style much better and longer than when it's clean. Pretty convenient when you're camping with your best friend's super hot brother you've had a crush on for years.

And even if you're not the camping type, these looks are also perfect for when you wake up too late to wash your hair (or if you're just feeling plain ol' lazy). Trust me, you'll love the result way better than if you just threw your greasy hair up into a ponytail for the third day in a row. Check out what I mean:

The thicker, the better

A thick, messy braid is perfect for days when you want to hide your unwashed hair. Before you style, mist your scalp with a texturizing product like Oribe Dry Texturizing Spray, $39. It gives you the benefit of dry shampoo without the powdery residue, says New York City hairstylist Ben Thigpen. Click here for the step-by-step tutorial to get this look.

Mama bun, baby bun

This is a fun look to try if your hair is a bit on the shorter side. It lets you play around with different lengths, and you won't have any of those annoying wispy pieces falling out of your bun at the nape of your neck. Click here for the step-by-step tutorial to get this look.

Knot it up

How fun is this look? It works best on long hair, since you need some length to tie it into a double knot. Before you start, tease your hair with a small toothed comb to create a textured base for the knot to stay in place, says New York City hairstylist Danielle Irene. Grungy and brush-free

Some good news: You don't need to use a brush for this look. Brushing distributes the oil from your scalp to the rest of your hair, making it look greasy and stringy. Instead, apply some volumizing powder to your roots and hit it with cool air from the blow dryer while massaging it into your scalp with your hands, says Julyet Berlen of the Cristophe Beverly Hills salon in Beverly Hills, Calif. This will give you that sexy, "rock 'n' roll" vibe. Click here for the step-by-step tutorial to get this look.

Waterfall braid

This is one of those hairstyles that's way easier than it looks. This style works best on dirty hair because it provides a better anchor to hold the braid. This means no pins or bands are needed to secure it. Click here for the step-by-step tutorial to get this look.

F is for fishtail

To make this fishtail style last even longer and hold better, mist your hair with a volumizing spray like Phyto Maximizing Volume Spray, $28, and then blow dry it with a round brush. The alcohol in the product will soak up the oil and add volume, says New York City hairstylist Alejandra. Click here for the step-by-step tutorial to get this look.

Twisty bun

All it takes to liven up a bun is to add a twist. It's easy -- just twist pieces of hair back and include them in your bun for a more romantic and dramatic look, says New York City hairstylist Luca Blandi. Click here for the step-by-step tutorial to get this look.
