    Drink Water, Look Younger?

Drinking enough?Drinking enough?Water. It's the one drink that's free, it's everywhere, and yet, we're not getting enough of it. At the end of the day, however, its water that's keeping us all alive but…are you getting enough? If you're drinking coffee all day at work followed by a few glasses of wine at happy hour, you may be putting yourself in danger for dehydration-one of the biggest beauty busters out there!

MORE: The Dirty Truth About Water

Water is the largest component of the body and at birth; in fact, our entire being is about 85 percent water. Water is essential for nutrient digestion and absorption as well as electrolyte balance and proper cell function. To give you further perspective, you can actually live longer without food than you can without water. Obviously, we need water to survive, but have you ever considered the beauty benefits of water? If you've ever said on a cold winter day, "my skin is just thirty for moisture," then you do! Simply put, a hydrated body means hydrated, healthy glowing skin. Dehydration for skin can be a disaster-it can cause your skin to be dry, dull and lifeless. Hydrated skin has life, moisture and vitality.

How much water should you be chugging?

While most of us think the rule of thumb is eight glasses of water a day, it really will vary on a few different factors including:

    • Living in a higher altitude
    • Air travel
    • Fever
    • Working out in hot and very humid weather
    • Working outside for your job (construction, landscaping, etc) in hot or humid weather
    • Age - infants and older people are more prone to dehydration
    • Participating in Endurance athletic events

MORE: How Much Water Do You Really Need?

If none of these factors describes you, then nine to 13 cups a day should be sufficient. Don't forget, there are also plenty of healthy foods that pack water in as well. Lettuce, cucumber, watermelon, broccoli, cabbage and spinach happen to be over 90 percent water. These foods also provide you big beauty benefits as well due to their high vitamin and mineral content.

How can you get more water in without even thinking? Start carrying around a water bottle with you everywhere you go for starters and in addition to that, slowly start ditching your cola (or diet cola) habit at home, work and when dining out. Move beyond the lemons and limes and start jazzing up your water with fresh cucumbers, strawberries, orange segments or mint. Most importantly though, start taking a peek behind you when you go to the bathroom. Your urine should be pale yellow color; if it's the color of a banana, fill up that water bottle and for the sake of great health and great skin, start sipping!

'Water. It's the one drink that's free' Wait a minute...free?!? If I use water from the sink, I get a water bill every month. And if I want to drink water from a bottle, I have to buy it and pay for it.

no such thing as free water it cost alot to run your faucet
      • Spawn32f 3 months ago
but if you got a gallon milk jug around or a pitcher fill it up with water leave the cap off for awhile to get rid of chlorine thats in your water and afterwards put it in the fridge and you got fresh water

You aren't actually being charged for the water, but for the infrastructure and the mechinization and the manpower all involved in getting the water to you. Not to mention the (sometimes) purification processes the water goes through. If you have a well though you don't pay for anything but the putting in of the well and the electricity used to run it. Not that wells are nessasaraly healthier or better mind you,

they used to say 6 to 8 eight oz glasses. I hate drinking water. But if you don't you won't burn fat. you have to drink water to burn off fat. I didn't see any mention of that.

The more you drink it, the more one starts to like and crave it. :) Just like soda pop or other drinks in that respect.

I replaced soda with at least 3 litres of water a day around 15 years ago. I'm in my 40's and get mistaken for 10 or more years younger often. I attribute it to the water!

Easy way to tell if you are getting enough water: look at your urine. If it's clear or very pale yellow, you are adequately hydrated. If you drink about 4-8oz. glasses of water a day, you should be fine. I wouldn't do less than that though. Alcohol is drying (no surprise) and tea and coffee just aren't enough fluids.

Coffee and tea are diuretics (dehydrating), and clear urine usually means your losing water.Very lightly yellow urine can indiciate a decent balance of salt and water.

13 cups a day, wouldn't that be 104 ounces of water. Sounds to much... there is such a thing of drinking to much water, which can flush Electrolytes out of your body.

just drink half your body weight in water--this is what is recommended by most doctors----drinking too much water can also harm you !!!
      • 12know 3 months ago
Moderation, people. 4-6 glasses of water a day is enough usually, unless you have a health issue that requires limitation of fluids or an increase of fluids.

I know people that drink 13 or more cups of soda or beer in a day and you're telling me that drinking the same is probably too much CariK? Wake up! Drinking too much water is almost impossible to attain.

this is like the 8th article on water intake i have read over the past 2 months.all of them stating we must drink 8-14 glasses of water per day. this is fine and all, and agree we need to drink water daily for our overall health. but every article has one thing in common. none of them give a measure per glass. does a glass consist of 4,6,8,10,12,16 ounces? 4 glasses at 14 per day is 56 ounces.sounds reasonable. but, 14 at 16 ounces, is 224 ounces if my math is correct. this is one quart short of 2 gallons per day.so, my thing is, instead of a glass, use a unit of measure as in ounces.because, afterall glasses come in a wide variety of sizes as indicated previously.

Ever since I started drinking more water, I have never had the chronic chapped lips that were a guarantee every winter all my life until then, 7 years now. Also, drink your water mostly all in-between meals, right up to 1/2 hour before, a large glass then primes you for digestion, then not again until food digested, or it dilutes digestion to drink a lot during meal. You won't be thirsty then anyway when drinking it in proper amounts in-between meals. :)

I wondered about that "free" statement too. Did you mean "free" as in no calories?! Nine to thirteen cups a day seems rather daunting. I heard something about drinking half your weight in ounces. That seems more logical to acomodate people of various sizes.

As more water sources are privatized we will see many more of the recommendations, studies, etc. It is going to be the most expensive utility in all parts of the world. And it is happening fast, as big money pours into the deals.

So, there are 24 hours in one day and we need to sleep for 8 of them leaving 16 left over and if I drink 13 glasses of H2O each day = peeing all day! This is RIDICULOUS! Get some math skills for no where in a sane world are we supposed to pee all day long!?

Where in Las Vegas is water free, unless you go out to eat or to a casino? Add the fact that Las Vegas is in the top 5 for the worst water in this country and the water company wants to keep gouging it's residents for money for crap water. Me and my dogs drink bottled water and it ain't free.

Everyone's different, contrary to what these guidelines would have you believe. I drink a 20-oz coffee spread out over an 8-hr workday. I also have an 8-oz fruit juice at lunch. Then about 10-oz milk with dinner and about 8-oz juice before bedtime. That's about 46 oz a day, and nearly half of that is a depleting drink. Yet, if I drink any more than that, especially water, I'm peeing clear liquid every single hour. Makes no difference whether I drink the water very slowly or a glass all at once. My body simply gets rid of it as fast as it can. That's my equilibrium.
