How Do You Feel About Man-icures?

    By India-Jewel Jackson, Glamour magazine

Between guy-liner and boy buns, I know that the male species is increasingly becoming a bit more feminine, but man-manicures take the cake. Last week I was seated next to a (straight!) gentleman on my flight to London wearing black nail polish. True story. Of course I asked a million questions!

As it turns out, photographer and blogger Adrian Morales' never steps out in public without black polish on his nails. "It's my signature style-usually my wife (better known as my partner-in-crime) paints them for me."

His wife... paints his nails... black... for... him... (Now I know how obsessive I am about my weekly manicures, and I remove my nail polish the instant I see the first chip. I'm not sure how I'd feel about my significant other sharing my passion for pretty polish.)

When I landed, I asked another one of my manicure-addicted male friends what women think about he's perfectly manicured tips. His response? He actually does it for the ladies.

"I started getting my nails done before fashion shows, and I kept it up because girlfriends loved it," says model-turned-DJ Ellison Robinson. "As a DJ I use my hands a lot, so it's necessary for me to keep them looking good and pampered. I mostly do them myself, nude and buffed. I would never wear color though!"

And the strangest thing about this? Perhaps women are much more progressive than I am. Jessica Alba's husband Cash Warren was recently spotted with fuchsia nails, and Heidi Klum's soon-to-be-ex Seal was snapped with neon yellow tips.

What do you think? How would you feel about your husband/boyfriend/boytoy wearing nail polish in any color other than clear?

Men are certainly not becoming 'more feminine' and I am so sick of this sexist drivel. Men have worn makeup and wigs for CENTURIES before they were suddenly considered 'girly' and therefore 'bad.' Look at an Egyptian statute, for Pete's sake. Or a dollar bill. Men have also been wearing nail polish and getting their nails done for grooming for ages. I'm just disgusted by the juvenile tone and attitude of this piece. Grow up. Or at least learn history. And yes, I think most people in the world (what with different cultures also not having an issue with men wearing nail polish) are not only more 'progressive,' but they're leaps and bounds more respectful and mature.

Yes, men used to wear wigs and makeup, but it was part of the culture at the time! Just because they did it a 100 years ago, doesn't mean they need to do it now. And its not sexist, I don't understand why it would be sexist wondering if wearing nail polish is manly. I think that you need to grow up. Would you like to start wearing corsets and long skirts again, just because it was fashionable for CENTURIES before it was acceptable for women to wear pants? No....? Thought so.

If you don't get how social constructs and norms become sexist, then you're just not educated enough to be intelligent and articulate on the subject (obviously). Just because you're not smart enough to understand something does not mean it isn't true. And I wear corsets somewhat frequently, and long skirts as well... so there goes your idiotic assumption. Plus, they were not fashionable for centuries, as they varied greatly as materials, social classes, gender roles, and culture evolved. Instead of opening your mouth on things you know nothing about, why not use your time productively and go educate yourself?

My now husband wore black and red nail polish when he was in high school and in his "goth" stage. I did not mind it then, but I do not like nail polish on older guys, regardless of what color it is. Having them manicured is one things, but color is a no-no in this girls books!

I don't care whether a man has the manicure to have his nails neat, but when color comes in that's just weird.

I painted my boyfriends nails black one time cause hes a bit of a rocker but if he painted his nails any other color i would not like that. I like my man to be a man. =)

to the author, I suppose then you prefer raggedy nails and over grown cuticles and chewed up nail beds then. The nerve of men to care about their appearances and maintain healthy nails.

if you read the article u would know its not about them keeping their nails healthy its about them painting them different colors which should definitely be considered feminine

these days there's dudes getting facials, manicured, waxed and botoxed...with all of these men lining up to get neutered it's hip now to be feminized...i don't highlight my hair, i've still got a pair....yeah honey I'm still a guy. Mr. Paisley said it best.

Uh, who cares? They're finger nails. I frankly don't give a damn what men do or don't in terms of "beauty routines" as long as they aren't wearing yesterday's clothes and have showered that morning. If they want to put on makeup, get waxed, get a facial, get a full-blown french manicure, wear high heels, wear a skirt, wear lumberjack boots and overalls, get a mullet, shave their head, dye their hair blue, gauge their ears, get a tattoo, or doodle sharpie hearts on their shoes, or ANY combination thereof, I. Do. Not. Care. I might have a good chuckle if you decide to sport a blue mullet, but I'll simply have my personal moment of amusement and then move on with my life.
