Lipsticks that Aren't Laced with Lead -- Our Best Picks

all natural lipstickall natural lipstickI was just as surprised as the next person to learn that over 400 lipsticks from brands like L'Oreal, Maybelline, NARS, and CoverGirl contain lead. Turns out, lipsticks actually contain a lot of nasty ingredients like crushed up bugs, harmful chemicals, and parasites. Point is, the stuff may be pretty, but it's also pretty gross. And according to a recent study, the average woman who wears lipstick daily eats five pounds of it a year, and that doesn't even account for the amount that is absorbed through the lips and into our bloodstream. So yeah, it may be worth making sure that your favorite cosmetic isn't harmful to your health.

The FDA maintains that the amount of lead and other stuff in lipsticks pose no safety risks, but it's still better to play it safe rather than sorry. So here are 5 lipsticks that are totally lead-free, safe to use, and good, good looking.

I use Wet and Wild at $1.98 and now find out it is lead-free...a bonus!

Wow, who would have thought that a cheap brand like Wet & Wild would NOT contain any lead in their lipstick. Just goes to prove that the more expensive brands of makeup are not always better....Also, why are there crushed bugs in lipsticks???? I'm not understanding that.

crushed bugs to create the color, some pink colored yogurts and other foods too. they just list it as a dye.

Parbens are also very dangerous, and most creams, foundations, eye shadows, mascaras and lipsticks contain them too. Try going to your local store and see how long it takes you to find make up that doesn't! But it is possible. St. Ives lotions are paraben-free and very cheap to buy. Plus, they smell great and work amazingly well. Burt's bees has a whole line of awesome products from shampoo to make up to zit remedies, and I use a lot of those.

We eat five pounds of lipstick a year? Really? Take the number of tubes of lipstick you completely use up in an entire year and tell me the contents out of the tubes would weigh as much as a large roasting chicken? I just picked up a tube of L'Oreal and the contents weigh about 1/10 of an ounce. Almost ten tubes to make ONE OUNCE. It would take almost a 160 tubes to make ONE POUND, and you'd have to EAT all of it, not leave it on napkins and coffee mugs and drink cans and water bottles. So, yes, lead in lipstick is a concern but let's not grossly exagerrate the risk.

      Is NYC lipstick lead free?
    • oogabooga  •  Portland, Oregon  •  2 months ago
i love how the FDA says it's fine to slather lead on your face but lead containing toys are a no go. idiots.
      • mblue 2 months ago
Toys are made for infants and toddlers who will probably mouthe them, exposing them to a much higher dose. Also, their tender systems are more easily hurt at this early age, leading to brain damage and developmental delays that are lifelong. Btw- I didn't see the part about slathering that you attribute to the FDA. Could you please clarify?
