Tattoos for Moms: why celebrity parents get inked

Angelina Jolie has six tattoos on her arm in honor of each of her children. Many mothers will carry pictures of their kids in their wallets, post photo albums on Facebook, wear jewelry with their children's birthstones or initials, or even put bumper stickers on their cars declaring there's a "baby on board." But the Daily Mail claims a new trend is emerging where proud moms are celebrating their kids—and their womanhood—through body art. Men have often paid tribute to their children through ink, but "mommy tattoos" are on the rise and female celebrities may be responsible for leading the trend.

Check out these celebrities with tattoo regrets

Angelina Jolie (pictured left) displays love for her six children on her arm. The birthplaces of Maddox, Pax, Zahara, Shiloh, Knox, and Vivienne (and last year she added Brad Pitt's) are written as earth coordinates covering up an old "Billy Bob" tattoo-the remnants of her old flame.

Heidi Klum has her soon-to-be-ex's name tattooed on her arm.Heidi Klum has husband Seal's name tattooed on her arm (pictured below), but they just announced they're separating, so that may get removed! Next to his name are four tattooed stars symbolizing the couple's children, Leni, Henry, Johan, and Lou. Remember: a spouse may be temporary, but children are forever.

Likewise, Pamela Anderson once had "Tommy" (as in her ex, rocker Tommy Lee) etched on her ring finger, but after the romance failed she changed it to "Mommy," a name that will be more permanent in her life.

Julia Roberts has the names of her three kids tattooed on her lower back.Forget "tramp stamps." Julia Roberts (pictured left) has the names of her kids, Hazel, Phinnaeus, and Henry, tattooed on her lower back.

Victoria Beckham has five stars tattooed on her back-one for her, one for husband David Beckham, and one for each of their three sons, Brooklyn, Romeo, and Cruz.

Brooke Burke got the names of her four children tattooed on her wrist in cursive. Now Neriah, Sierra, Rain, and Shaya will always be with her.

Mel B of the Spice Girls has a Phoenix on her arm as a tribute to daughter Phoenix Chi.

Let's face it--tattoos have a bad wrap. But that's because some people get them while intoxicated or choose symbols or characters in other languages without understanding their true meaning. Some people get random tattoos like a rose with no real meaning at all and later regret them. Others get caught up in passion and get a tattoo for their significant other that will last far longer than the courtship.

You know which tattoo most women wouldn't regret? One in honor of their children. Whether it's a tattoo of your kid's name, their birth date, their baby footprints, or their portrait, a mommy tattoo has a meaning that people can respect. Tastes change, and relationships end, but your kids will always be your kids no matter what.

Would you get a mommy tattoo? Let us know in the comments and check out this clip below of celebrities and their biggest tattoo regrets.

Hey author, I doubt celebrities were the first ones to tattoo their kid's names to their bodies. They are most like following the trend, not creating it.

She's too old for a tramp stamp (who cares if it's her children's names). This is why no woman should get a tramp stamp in the first place. It looks ridiculous once you're than 30 years old.

If anyone styles their lives or makes decisions based on the lives of "celebrities" they deserve every ugly tattoo and bad decision that follows. Live YOUR life, turn off TMZ and Real Fake Golddiggin Basketball Housewives of the OC and get real. If you like tats and want one to commemorate the first time Junior took a poop then go for it, but don't do it because Posh Spice did.

At the age of 40 I got my 3rd tattoo. I put my son's name on the inside of my wrist (the only vivisble one) and I have NO regrets. It took many years for him to come into our lives and the tattoo is for me and him. He is so proud (age 3) when he points to it and with a smile on his face says that that's his name. To each his own.....

My HIDDEN tattoo's are no more trashy or trampy then those that wear their darn pj's out in public. No more nasty than those women that wear flip flops with crusty feet. No more offensive than a man scratching/pulling his 'junk' in public, spitting or cat-calling. No more disrespectful than hateful judgmental idiots.

Google bad tattos. There are tons of funny ones. Many of them have words misspelled.

I hate to break it to you, but celebrities didn't start this trend, they just made it more mainstream. And Julia Robert's tat is still a tramp stamp.

wow really, hmmm thats funny I remember getting my kids name in ink on my wrist because I wanted to, don't remember it being done by a celebrity at the time!
I'm pretty sure MOST NORMAL people who get tattoo's get them because they WANT them, not because some celebrity is seen with one!

Well.... I do have a "Mommy Tattoo" and it wasn't because some celebrity has it either. I have my son's name and birthday written in his handwriting in alternating colors; blue, yellow, red, and green. I got it because no matter how big he gets I still have his little penmanship that was written when he was 8 years old. When I'm 90 I can still look at it and smile and remember the day I got it and remember what his writing looked like so many years ago.

i think the smile on my face, is enough of a tattoo for me. IF someone asks about my smile, i can say i am thinking about my wonderful daughter. How much joy and love she brings into my life.

How does anyone (who cannot truly read Chinese) know that the tat doesn't really say Sweet & Sour Pork or stupid round eye paid for this? If you aren't Chinese you probably should not get one of those symbols.

My son passed away withing 2 hours of his birth due to a birth defect. I have his name and date over my heart along with a pink and blue ribbon (like a cancer ribbon). The ribbon stands for pregnancy and infant loss awareness.

I have the word "Hope" tattooed and our four children's name around in a circle, Danielle, Jessica, Michael, and Donovan. This was done in 1998, I did it for the hope of life for my children, little did we know how hard we would be tried with the sudden deaths of our son, Donovan, in 1999 and our daughter, Jessica, in 2005. My tattoo is precious to me as I still carry them at all times right along with the stretchmarks. Yes, if you want a tattoo get one that means something personally to you not one you will regret later.

To each their own, but I'm not a fan of tattoos. Might be a generational thing I can't think of anyone my age that I know personally that has any.

I'm 28. My mom has had my name on her arm since I was born. Angelina Jolie started nothing. Not even homewrecking...
