    How To: Ocean-Inspired Nail Art

Ocean NailsOcean NailsNail art has come a long way since sparkles and daisies. Here, artist and nail tech Breanne Trammell shows us how to paint designs inspired by the late California-based artist, Richard Diebenkorn and his soothing Ocean Park series of abstract paintings

ToolsTo master any nail art design you will need a few nail tools. You can either use polish that comes with a long thin brush, or go to a craft store and buy a cheap thin brush that will allow for you to make the thin sprinkle look. For this nail-look you will need a very thin brush for outlining.

Trammell suggests muted ocean inspired polish shades. She uses, Essie's Lapiz of Luxury, Pretty Edgy, and A Crewed Interest. All available on essie.com, $8.

Step 1: Start with clean hands and nails.

Step 2: File and buff as your prefer and apply a clear base coat.

Step 3Step 3: Build up a series of squares and rectangles with your three colors. Don't worry about overlapping the colors. Diebenkorn's paintings were rigid, but not perfect, so keep that in mind.

Step 4Step 4: Once the shapes are completely dry you'll want a contrasting color to outline a few of those shapes. For this use a very thin brush. Trammell reccommends using a dark purple polish for the outlining.

Step 5:Create angles wherever you want, while outlining the shapes.

Final look!Step 6: When you're finished polishing and your nails are completely dry, apply a clear top coat.

Step 7: Let nails dry and upload a picture to Instagram to make all your friends (and followers) jealous!
