How to Get Miss Universe Olivia Culpo's Romantic Updo—Plus, Her Guilty Pleasure, Her Bad-Hair-Day Secret, and More!

by Beth Shapouri

If you were mesmerized by Miss Universe Olivia Culpo's curly updo at the Miss USA pageant, then keep reading because I've got the how-to from hairstylist Albert Luiz. Oh, and the folks at Chi (official hairstylists for the show) sent over a cute little Q&A with the pageant queen too, so get scrollin'!

How Albert created the look:
"I first separated the front from the back at the ears with a center part for the front. I used the CHI 3/4-inch ceramic spring iron to create horizontal barrel curls.

After her whole head was in coils, he says, "I used the Farouk Royal Treatment White Truffle Foundation to help define and smooth the back curls as I separated then joined them all into a cascade of curls. I did the same to each side while softly twisting the entire side section and securing it to center back."

In other words, he created a bun in the middle, then swirled each side section around it to create one giant bun. Then he blasted it all with CHI Magnified Volume Finishing Spray.

That takes care of the hair, now let's get to Olivia herself.

Q: Curly or straight?
Olivia: Curly. Always! It depends on the look, but I really do like volume in my hair, and it's easier to get that with curls. But sometimes I go straight if I am going for a more sleek look, like if I am wearing leather or trying to be more of a punk-rock chick. But curls are more easy, breezy, bouncy, which is more of my personality.

Q: Guilty pleasure?
Olivia: I love ice cream. Mint chocolate chip. I limit the amount I eat, because, you know, you can have too much of a good thing. But after the Miss USA pageant, I will definitely have some.

Q: Who's your favorite person to follow on Twitter?

Olivia: Oh my God--I like to follow FatAmy, which is Rebel Wilson's character from the movie Pitch Perfect. Really funny.

Q: Who is your style icon?
Olivia: I have so many. I love classic Audrey Hepburn, Victoria Beckham, Kate Middleton.

Q: What's the longest you've gone without styling your hair?

Olivia: I went to an all-girls school in high school, so getting ready every day was not a priority. I would literally roll out of bed every day.

Q: What's your favorite backstage beauty tip?
Olivia: I like to do this thing sometimes when my hair is dirty--I go with a sleek ponytail, like tight, tight, tight. So if you don't have time to wash it and dry it, it's perfect. That's my dirty little secret.

Got to love a girl with a dirty little beauty secret, right? She seems lovely. And what about the hair--any of you going to try to re-create her updo? Discuss!
