Perfume Ban in New Hampshire? State Explains Why

New Hampshire is proposing a perfume ban for state employeesNew Hampshire is proposing a perfume ban for state employeesMany women love wearing perfume, but have you ever gotten a headache from someone who has sprayed on way too much of a scent you don't like? Back in 2008, Susan McBride, sued Detroit under the Americans with Disabilities Act, claiming a co-worker's fragrance made it hard for her to breathe and do her job. She was eventually awarded $100,000, and the city warned workers to avoid using scented products like perfume, cologne, deodorant, lotion, and aftershave. Now New Hampshire is looking to do the same.

State representative Michele Peckham is sponsoring House Bill 1444 which hopes to ban state employees who work with the public from wearing perfume. Apparently a constituent with extreme allergies approached Peckham with the proposal. "It may seem silly, but it's a health issue," Peckham told the Union Leader. "Many people have violent reactions to strong scents."

According to Jonathan Bayuk, an allergist at Hampden County Physician Associates, potent fragrances are more than just annoying or distracting. "There are many people who have chemical sensitivity type of issues, where they are either allergic to other things, say dust mites or mold or pollen, Bayuk told WWLP. "And then when they are exposed to chemicals or irritating fragrances they have a reaction that's very similar."

Allergies and annoyances aside, should the government be able to regulate what we smell like? Another ban was recently proposed in Louisiana to prevent people from wearing pajamas in public. Aren't there more important issues that should be dealt with than strong fragrance odors?

Should we be allowed to smell however we want to, or should there be laws against wearing perfume to work?

I'm about to quit the job I love because my boss and coworkers refuse to stop wearing fragrances. Besides the fact that I'm physically hurt, it hurts my feelings that they care that little for someone who's done a great job for them. :-(..

I hope to God this bill passes! I'm so sick at work due to perfumes, colognes, strong scented deoderants, candles, plug-ins and the list goes on! My boss and coworkers refuse to stop and they make it into a personal thing - it's become an almost hostile work environment. It's not personal, people - I feel horrible at work (headache, itchy nose, sneezing, heart palpitations, and general malaise). Please, stop. You don't HAVE to wear the stuff to function in life, but I can't function if you choose to do it.

People with MCS are not just 'sensitive' to the perfume, the perfume is poisonous to the body of someone that has MSC. If someone with MCS inhales it, it is toxic. While the person wearing the perfume is enjoying themselves, the person with MCS will have a reaction and suffer for days or purhaps weeks from having been exposed to it. The person wearing the perfume goes on with their life, totally unaware that they have extremely affected the life of the person with MCS. The person with MCS will go away and suffer ... try to recover in silence.

In response to the person that believes we should just ask a co-worker to stop wearing a fragranced product if it causes physical reactions... It doesn't work. I am severely ill from exposures to chemicals and can no longer work because of co-workers' use of fragrances. Passing a law like this might make thousands of people who are ill like me have the opportunity to work again.

On the flip side, I wish there was a way to regulate people's body odor. Too much perfume makes me get a headache, but I've smelled people who stank so much I nearly puked.

I am quite shocked by some of the responses to this topic. Do you really think a person's right to have something as frivolous as perfume is more important that another person's need to breathe without becoming ill? Bottom line: breathing is a necessity, perfume is not.

To all the people who think this is silly, THINK!!! Perfumes are made from very toxic chemicals!! They are not the flower essences of yesteryear. And even essential oil fragrances make some people extremely ill for hours and even days. For some of ut it is an extreme blood pressure rise with tachycardia, or vomiting and diarrhea, or anaphylactic shock. Get the picture!

How about this...why doesn't the people who is allergic go to her coworker and respectfully say "I am allergic to your perfume. Could you refrain from wearing it at work?" People need to take some freaking ownership of what goes on around them and affects them and not rely on the freaking government to do it for them! What a waste of our tax dollars!!!!

only those with severe allergies would understand that people with perfume allergies often have life threatening reactions, like throat spasms when exposed to triggers like perfume!
