The Plastic Surgery Procedure that Makes You Look the Youngest

Plastic surgery to preserve youth.Plastic surgery to preserve youth.Forget the Botox and lasers: If you're the type to fight wrinkles and sags by getting "a little work done," well, you might consider going ahead and getting a lot.

At least, that's what new findings from the University of Toronto seem to suggest.

According to the study just published by the Archives of Facial Plastic Surgery, the more surgery patients had done, the younger they were perceived to be (up to about nine years less than their actual chronological ages, in fact).

    MORE: How Your Skin Ages

The study participants included 60 patients (all but six of whom were female), between the ages of 45 to 72, divided by three distinct levels of nips and tucks. Group one had undergone face and neck lifts; the second also had face and neck lifts but added upper and lower eyelid work to the menu; and the third were no strangers to the surgical knife, having had all of the above performed plus forehead lifts as well. Medical students were then asked to estimate the patients' ages by studying photographs of them.

Surprisingly (or not, depending on your perspective), the students perceived those in the first category as appearing 5.7 years younger (on average), but for the second and third groups, surmised the patients were a whopping 7.5 and 8.4 years younger, respectively.

While it might make sense that the more plastic surgery one gets the younger they look-that is the point, after all, isn't it?-there may be another key reason why the latter two groups seemed to have shaved off so many years: They both had eye procedures done.

QUIZ: How Healthy is Your Skin?

"Having been doing this for about 25 years, I have definitely observed that eyes are the part of the body that begin to show age first, and they're certainly the most apparent," says YouBeauty Cosmetic Surgery Expert Arthur Perry, M.D., F.A.C.S. "Necks and jowls can be hidden a little more easily."

But he cautions that people shouldn't necessarily read the study and take away the idea that more surgery equals greater results. While he asserts that when it comes to anti-aging, a small improvement made to the eye area can give you "bigger bang for your buck," the goal shouldn't be racking up procedures.

After all, looking younger isn't everything. "The goal of good surgery is not to look younger, it's to look better," says Perry. "We're not necessarily trying to restore people to age 30."

    MORE: Anti-Aging Tips for Eyes

And as he wisely points out, too much work shows (Joan Rivers may look younger, but...), and at a certain age, no wrinkles at all looks unnatural. "You only have to watch next week's Oscars to see what I'm talking about," he laughs. Good point sir, good point. There isn't a whole lotta "natural" walking that red carpet.

Priscilla Presley, Bruce Jenner, Kenny Rogers and many more....prime examples of what can go wrong. Priscilla ruined her lovely face. Kenny looks like a whole different person. Bruce looks like a woman. Lindsay Lohan's lips enter the room a minute before the rest of her body. Dolly Pardon is another one who no longer looks like herself...a little too much. A subtle nip/tuck may enhance your appearance, but too much just makes you look laughable.

You forgot Joan Rivers. That woman has no facial expressions at ALL!

Yeah, some of them have really gone overboard. But the real funny part? These people all have money and should have done their research or had their assistants do the research to make sure the plastic surgeon was legit, no state board complaints or lawsuits pending. I believe the surgeon that Priscilla used is now in jail.

The more celebrities I see after plastic surgery, the more reason NOT to do it. There is something "off" - don't have words for it. Joan Rivers is an example of too much. After plastic surgery a lot of women look "emotion-less". There is nothing more lovely than an attractive older woman who is confident in her own skin. What good is a smile without some wrinkles around it? And how much better the twinkle in the eye seems with an accompanying crinkle.

Poor Joan....I can't say that any of it's helped her...she doesn't even look human. And I think that the next surgery should remove the 150 lbs. attached to her hip, in the form of her daughter, Melissa....isn't it much healthier for her to cut the umbilical cord at some point before the age of 45? I mean, she's even got the cord attached to her grandson, for goodness' sake....let go, Joan! Joan looks scary and, okay, the rest of them who've had it do, too! I mean, poor Kenny Rogers...he looked SO much better before he had that "surgery" done. And Mickey Rourke looks like he's from another planet; that's just plain freaky! What happened to aging gracefully? And, maybe a LITTLE surgery is okay, but not continually, like Joan....enough already....when people who know you don't even recognize you, that's too much!

LOL The model they used already looks like she is in her 20s! Why did they not use a person in the age range they mentioned. Scary plastic face Joan Rivers said decades age, "once you have had a face lift, you will always have to have a face lift." Now why would someone want to do that to their face. I am 56, told I look 48. I am just now seeing a few tiny lines on my forehead and under my eyes. True I do not like it, who would? But it is called growing old gracefully. And if I wanna have my face skin tighter, I just stand facing a very strong wind (ha ha ha, jk).

I am 60. I had upper and lower eyelids done this past December to correct droopy upper eyelids that interfered with my distance vision. The lower eyelid surgery was to correct huge saggy bags. A day after surgery my eyes looked like I was beaten up and left for dead. Doctor said that was "normal" A few days later my eyes had swelled to the point of busting open the stitches and another surgery to replace them. Found out I had an allergic reaction to the cream I had to put on my eyelids 3x a day. Just never knew I was allergic to it. More problems later which required yet another surgery on both eyes. I'm healed now...but now my distance vision is worse. Do I look better, yes. Do I regret my decision to have surgery? Yes.

Sooner or later not even the fakery will help you. It's all an illusion brought on by vanity. The plastic surgeons love you. Your vanities are makeing them rich. What a society.

After years and many $$$ worth of plastic surgery, I am done with it. Happy with what I had done, just wish now, that I had never started.

I don't judge anyone for their decisions to get plastic surgery. I'ts easy to get addicted to this stuff because it really does work well and do wonders for your self esteem. I had a tummy tuck at 25 for purely reconstructive purposes after a 70-lb weight loss. A few years after that i got botox with a girlfriend on a whim (and still do) Then I got fillers around my smile lines. Now I want new breasts. It's really hard to stop once you get going and I'm only 30. I don't regret the tummy tuck but I wish I had skipped the injections and just focused on using sunscreen regulalry and eating a healthy diet.

Plastic surgery scares me frankly. Sure I have the crinklies under my eyes but I am debating whether to get those done at some point or not. Women Joan Rivers' age and Cher look hideous with all they've gotten done. It was too much if you ask me.

If getting surgery makes you look younger, then why don't celebrities look like their just barely too young to drink? Someone who has aged naturally is way more attractive than someone who's in denial.

I've done it. The results are ok. Would I do it again? I'd rather give the $$ to someone who needs it.
