If you need a bit more info on the whole ombre thing before we get more into splashlights, here you go: The word "ombre" is actually French and means shaded or shading, and the process is usually done with colors that complement each other to create a sun-kissed look. But it can also be done in a more dramatic fashion with colors that create a stark contrast too one another. Plenty of famous females, from Beyonce to Rachel Bilson, have gone the ombre route at one time or another.

As for splashlights, here are the details: The look was first created by Aura Friedman, a hair colorist at the Sally Hershberger Salon in New York, who told Allure she "wanted to create the effect that a laser beam is hitting your hair at a certain spot." That "laser beam effect" involves painting bleach on to a small horizontal section of hair, starting with the undermost layers, then covering all of the hair above and below the stripe with a color close to your natural shade. Friedman, who has a serious track record of creating new hair trends at New York Fashion Week, has showcased splashlights on her Tumblr account too. All that's left is for celebs to jump on the bandwagon. Stay tuned …
