With summer here, it is important to avoid the harmful effects of the sun. Beauty Expert, Kelley West offers advice on keeping skin out of harms way.
"Sunscreen is extremely important and it needs to be applied every 3 to 4 hours," says Kelley. "Wait 20 minutes before going into the sun to let the lotion penetrate the skin and put sunscreen on every part of your body."
As a licensed medical aesthetician, Kelley has seen a lot of patients with sun damage. Kelley warns, "Make sure you apply sunscreen all the way to the hairline which will also protect you when driving because the sides of our faces get direct sun exposure while behind the wheel." She continues, "Also, apply sunscreen to the tops of your hands and to the tops of your feet, they get exposed to direct sun when wearing sandals or walking barefoot."
Kelley gives a reminder to protect lips and scalp. "A lip balm with SPF 30 is great. If you part your hair, use a squeeze version of lip balm with SPF and apply it down your part to give the scalp extra protection. And lastly, on the sunscreen front, is clothing. Clothing made with SPF is a necessary investment. You can get shirts, a floppy hat, a baseball cap, sun visors, scarfs and other items made with material that filters the damaging, skin cancer causing UV rays."
