Many are so against long distance relationships that they'll automatically shut down any guy who lives even a mile too far. Some just want to date a guy who lives close by, others have had bad experiences in the past and don't want to go through it again, then there are those who have heard so many bad things about that type of relationship that they refuse to find themselves in the same situation. While not living near your guy is the biggest disadvantage, there are quite a few benefits to being in a long distance relationship.
You allow space in the relationship
When you live close by to your guy, it's easy for the two of you to quickly turn into a "we" where you do almost everything together. It can be cute at first, but after awhile it starts to feel more like smothering. That closeness can sometimes destroy the relationship more than help it. In a long distance relationship, you're forced to have that space that can give the two of you a bit of breathing room.
Visiting is a vacation in itself
When your guy lives in another area, state or country, visiting him is like taking a vacation. It works the same way when he visits you. It gives the two of you a chance to explore your respective areas as a pair and show each other what you love about your home. It's a great way to keep things exciting.
You improve communication
Being in a long distance relationship means you don't have a choice but to learn how to communicate better if you want your relationship to succeed. It's a surprisingly big challenge knowing you can't always settle issues face-to-face with your guy. Improving your communication skills is going to be incredibly useful not only with your guy, but in every type of relationship you have.
You're more present
Face-to-face visits happen much less frequently in a long distance relationship, which means you learn to appreciate them even more. When you know you can't just run to his house when you feel like it, every minute you spend together seems more precious. You learn how to be more present not only in your relationship, but in all aspects of your life as well.
Gestures seem sweeter
In a standard relationship, we unfortunately take some things for granted after being together for awhile. Nice gestures happen more frequently and become more of a habit. However, in a long distance relationship, every gesture seems just a tad bit sweeter simply because you're not exposed to them as often and you usually don't have an idea of when they're going to happen.
Long distance relationships aren't for everyone, but they're also not always as bad as many envision them to be. Should you find yourself with the chance to get involved in one, don't focus so much on the negative aspects and instead concentrate on the benefits. It's not particularly the easiest or most ideal situation, but when it comes to love, it's usually worth taking the chance.
