9 Habits that will shrink your middle

Getty ImagesGetty ImagesSick of crunches? So are we. Luckily, abdominal exercises alone do not a flat belly make. In fact, there are loads of little things-from what you drink to the way you handle stress-that can make or break your middle. Here are 9 easy ways to start shrinking without crunching.

    1. Calm down. Too much stress can contribute to a potbelly. Stress increases levels of cortisol, a hormone that seems to direct fat to our middle, says Jacob Seidell, PhD, of the National Institute of Public Health in Bilthoven, Netherlands. To keep levels low, try this 5- to 10-minute stress reducer: Find a quiet, comfortable place to sit. Next, take several slow, deep breaths to help clear your mind. Continue breathing deeply and repeat the word one to yourself as you exhale. (If you get distracted, just bring your focus back to the word one.) Practice this for 5 to 10 minutes once or twice a day.

    10 silent signals you're stressed

    2. Skip the alcohol for a week or so. That glass of wine with dinner may be part of the reason your jeans are too tight. Alcohol also tends to raise cortisol levels, sending fat to your belly, Seidell says.

    3. Stop smoking. "It keeps me thin," proclaim many smokers. But the truth is that smokers tend to have more abdominal fat than nonsmokers, says Seidell. (The stress hormone cortisol seems to be the culprit here too.) "When people stop smoking, the amount of abdominal fat actually decreases," he says.

    4. Eat more fiber. Not only is fiber great for overall weight loss (it fills you up so you don't eat as much), but it also prevents constipation, which can cause your tummy to bulge, says Lawrence J. Cheskin, MD, a gastroenterologist and director of the Johns Hopkins Weight Management Center in Baltimore. To stay regular, aim for 22 to 25 g of fiber a day by eating more whole grains, fruits, and vegetables

    5. Drink up. For premenstrual bloating, drink lots and lots of water. This will actually help flush away bloating, not make it worse

    Convenient, budget-friendly packaged foods

    6. Keep bones strong. Osteoporosis can lead to fractured bones in your spine, causing you to slump. That shortens your abdominal cavity, giving your belly no place to go but out, says Willibald Nagler, MD, physiatrist in chief emeritus at the New York Hospital-Cornell Medical Center in New York City. Be sure to get 1,000 mg of calcium every day from the foods you eat and/or from supplements.

    7. Get your heart rate up. All the ab exercises in the world won't do a thing unless you get rid of the fat hiding your abdominal muscles. The best way is to do aerobic exercise for 45 to 60 minutes, 5 times a week.

    8. Tuck your tummy. Imagine there's a magnet pulling your belly button back toward your spine. Practice the tuck until it becomes comfortable, and soon it will come naturally--like breathing. Do it every chance you get.

    9. Get a bonus ab workout. Stand as much as possible when doing weight-lifting exercises. That way your abs work too. "They help to balance and stabilize your body," says Tammy Strunk, an Emmaus, PA, fitness instructor. Concentrate on keeping your abs tight and maintaining good posture, but don't hold your breath.

Can't do crunches because I have a rod fused to my spine and every time I try to do them I end up in severe pain. Not worth it!

OMGosh! Calm down?!?!?!?! Have you ever had 2 children - boy & girl and had to break up fights? That alone rules out the Calming Down thing. And by the way, have you ever had to pinch pennies all the while trying to raise your children in a society where most parents are trying to be their child's best friend rather than being their parent. STRESS!!! I'll take the belly flab (5'6" 125 lbs) if it means that I have raised my children with values and treating others with respect. :-)

not reading it, because i'm underweight from depression+a few mild disorders-caused weight loss (thanks to my exes and the emosional/psycholopgical issues they caused! but my current <3 has been very supportive in helping me gain the weight back! just 15 more lbs or a little more or less to go!)

ps. its hard to flatten a gut. takes a machine to really work that gut flat! i know because i used to use workout/weight machines back in hs (actually workouts were at a local workout place since the hs didn't have a gym and hs was in NYC. at the time i lived 1 1/2 hours north of the city and did PE requirements 2 hours a week[end] at a local gym (which even had a pool...i think! been around 6 yrs since hs, so i forget little things here and there).

NOTE TO THE WEIGHTLOSS OCD PEOPLE, PLEASE THINK OF THE UNDERWEIGHT PEOPLE WHO ARE STRUGGLING TO GAIN WEIGHT AND STOP ASSUMING ALL WOMEN ARE OVERWEIGHT. ALSO, STOP SPAMMING THE NEWS WITH WEIGHTLOSS TIPS! WE NEED WEIGHT GAIN TIPS TOO FOR THE SICKLY AND THE PREGNANT WOMEN! WTH IS WRONG WITH CHUBBY PREG WOMEN?!? WTH IS WRONG WITH WEIGHT GAIN FOR THE UNHEALTHY UNDERWEIGHTED PEOPLE? YOU MUST LOVE DEADBABIES AND ANOREXIC PEOPLE! UNDERWEIGHT AND ABORTION HURTS WOMEN AND KILLED THEM TOO! SO FU! TIE YOUR TUBES IF YOU DON'T WANT A KID TO EFF UP YOUR FIGURES OR STFU!!!

The one thing you failed to mention was the benefit of eating coconut. I have been handing out Mounds Minatures to people who want to lose their belly fat. How does it work? The coconut improves the health of the thyroid which controls the metabolism. A healthier thyroid will help burn more fat. By the way, the new dark chocolate style are another health plus. And for those who say - what about the fat - coconut is a medium chain fat, not a long chain fat.

if someone doesn't smoke and yet they have big belly what they should do !?
    • MIS-SPELLER  •  2 years 0 months ago
interesting but the only part I don't agree with is the tummy tuck. The natural way a healthy human should breathe is from his or her diaphragm with a breath dropping deep into the abdomen. Performing this tummy tuck will hinder the proper breath (which is key to relaxation as anyone who takes yoga can testify to) and ultimately induces more stress!

Wow, what a useless article. Virtually none of the information provided will make any difference towards "shrinking your middle". What crap is peddled under the guise of "fitness" information boggles the mind.

I agree with everything except the tummy tuck advice.... the very same advice I heard often before suffering from an eating disorder. On what planet does sucking in your stomach help you lose weight? All that piece of advice serves is to tell us once again, that health is less important that appearance. You may be unhealthy and overweight, but if you just suck in your stomach enough - its ok! As someone who has suffered from a life threatening disease (anorexia) that is related to weight and appearance, I can strongly attest to the fact that while such advice may be well-intentioned, in the end it leads to no true help or lifestyle change. I read the article expecting helpful advice on how to lead a healthy lifestyle - instead I found myself seeing that piece of advice that has nothing to do with health, and everything to do with appearance. Rather than tell us how to seemingly 'shrink' our middle by sucking it all in, you should be advocating for a healthy lifestyle that leads to a weight where 'sucking it in' is no longer necessary. I am sadly disappointed in this article.

I lost over 45 pounds last year doing this same stuff....well I don't drink or smoke so that was already off the list.....I have a pretty full day having a healthy breakfast, lifting weight's in the morning......dancing and doing yoga in the evening. You'd think I wouldn't have much time to do such thing's with and active 3 year old around but she join's in with me it's so sweet, she'll say "You can do it mommy" talking about the sweetest motivator.

One morning I tried to put on my jeans and they looked awful, my belly was hanging out, gross..!! So I decided to start doing all the things above mentioned, plus I added magnesium citrate to keep me regular, I quit eating most carbs and sugar, in one month I lost 10 lbs and no more belly, it was hard, but my body is thanking me for it, I look and feel great, the hardest part was giving up sugar and alcohol, since I was used to drinking wine regularly, but I don't miss it anymore, if you follow these steps it will absolutely help your belly go down, mine did.!! Great article..!!
