How to Pick the Best Bathing Suit for Your Body Type

You can run and you can hide, but bathing suit season is here whether you like it or not. Don't hide under your tunic this summer, instead use these tips from New-York based wardrobe stylist Shatonia Amee to find out which suit style will be the most flattering for your body type. If You're Pear-Shaped...

Pick a suit with some lift, to give you a little more oomph and curve to your shape. Your best bet on top is a push-up bra to give your breasts maximum support.

Since most pear shapes have a slightly larger bottom than top, buy your bikini bottom one size larger than you would your top. The beauty of separates is that you can mix and match, changing up your options. Related: Find the Perfect Pair of Jeans for Your Body Type

    If You're Rectangle-Shape...

If you find you have larger breasts than the average beach bunny, splurge and buy a supportive top with full coverage. This will give you control over your top and a healthy shape. For total control, Amee recommends MiracleSuit, which has girdle-like boning in the sides and stomach to help her look slim and firm. "It's actually supposed to make you look 10 pounds lighter," Amee says. Yes, please!

    If You're Boy-Shape...

Choose a high-waisted bikini bottom, one with lift for your rear. Amee is a fan of Spanx Full Coverage Bikini Bottom (yes, they make bathing suits too!). This style accentuates your waist and makes your long, lean body look curvier.

The beauty of this shape is that you can pull off a one-piece suit as well as a two-piece suit. One-pieces will make your body look even leaner while a two-piece will bring out your curves. Related: 15 Amazing Celebrity Fitness Tips

    If You're Hourglass-Shape...

If you have an hourglass shape, your waist is typically much smaller than your bust or hips. Pick a suit that will accentuate your waist and flatter your other assets. If you are a taller hourglass, a high-cut bottom or boy shorts will bring definition to your legs. As for the top, choose one with an underwire or a bandeau top. Related: Get Toned At Every Age

    If You're Petite...

For smaller, petite figures opt for a string bikini that ties on the hips. This will bring attention to your curves, especially if you are a petite boy-shape. Halter tops are best for those with a smaller breast size, as they will push up and support your chest. To give yourself the illusion of added curves, buy a bottom with a floral print or one with ruffles. Related: Beat Belly Bloat

I hate how the new trend is for EVERYONE to wear a bikini (everyone under 40 I guess). They don't even seem to bother making one-piece suits for anyone under the Grandma age, so when you do find a one-piece it's usually got some flower design on it. Though French bikinis are coming back, thank god, so I guess I'll just cover up with those.

Ogawa Burukku: There are a ton of very flattering, youthful one peices out there. Heck, even Victoria's Secret has them. Personally, I prefer to wear a bikini, but to each their own.

How about a suit that covers your legs right above or below the knee, like a spandex thing? That would be comfy, not too revealing and appropriate for all us ladies that hate our legs. Has anybody seen these?

Excellent information... Although I must agree with the comment made previously; what ever happen to the bathing suits that actually covered what needed to be covered. Although unpopular, I think more people should subscribe to the belief that less is not always best when dealing with bathing suites. Cover up people. Hey Imogene, one-piece still show off a lot of skin especially those thighs. If you really want to keep your Holy Spirit, then wear suits that cover from neck to ankle.

whatever happened to those great bathing suits from the 20's and 30's? you know, the ones that were baggy and covered everything from chest to knees. oh how i wish those would come back into fashion!

What about those of us who are plus size hourglass shape? I didn't see any recommendations for those. And I'm going swimsuit shopping on Sat. Ugh!! I have awful thighs that I would love to cover up. I'm very top heavy with a smaller waist and bigger hips. Nothing flatters me! And, Pixie, sorry that us fat chicks offend your delicate eyes at the beach but we have the right to be there too. Enjoy the great body you apparently have while you have it because it may not last forever. Mine didn't. And you might want to work on your tolerance of all people. It will make your life much more enriched.

i like a skirt bottom, with a tankini top, a solid color on bottom, and a pattern on top, because i have an hourglass shape, but my hips are a little wide, and my waist is teeny tiny, and it makes my hips seem smaller and my waist a little bigger so i look halfway normal, lol

If boys and men can wear big sloppy swimtrunks, why on earth must girls and women wear swimsuits cut so closely to our crotches?!?! Why do I have to pay to have my hair ripped out so I don't have an unsightly hair anywhere? I've always thought it was kind of twisted to put little girls in swimsuits that are actually quite revealing compared to what little boys wear. Society needs to rethink this, because I know I have.

What about for people with an F cup on top, and not much belly/hips?
    • itslilolme  •  2 years 0 months ago
Ah yes, swimsuit season. The season when the people who really should cover up feel the unexplicable urge to wear speedos and thongs.

      Sighs.

The only person's butt cheeks I want to see belong to my husband - and even I don't want to see them on the beach. Thank God we've got our own pool! Skinny dipping in the moonlight rocks!

If you want cool vintage looking bathing suits there's a really awesome (if a little spendy) website-www.modcloth.com. Most of the stuff on there isn't cheap by any means, BUT if you like that look they have REALLY cute stuff!

I'm actually glad that women's bathing suits are fitted. I tried swimming in baggy shorts a couple of times (I wear shorts over my suit if I am water skiing or wake boarding) and it's just annoying and cumbersome! Believe me, I too find it annoying to contantly have to shave, wax and pluck, and I really miss the boy short styles of bikini's, but I'll take skimpy and skin tight over clumsy and baggy. I suppose we could all wear skin tight, knee length, one piece short suits, but they are still skin tight and therefore not very modest. They also don't look comfortable at all. I just don't see a need for that. The human body is a beautiful thing and a little bikini can still look classy.
