    Instant Skinny: 8 Ways to look thinner, now!

    Sure, diet and exercise are key to making pounds disappear. But while we're waiting for the results, why not depend on the kindness of illusion? As in: "Now you see it. Now you don't!"

    Personally, I'm clueless as far as fashion and beauty go, so I'm pretty pumped to bump into former colleague Charla Krupp, whose book, How To Never Look Fat Again: Over 1,000 Ways to Dress Thinner-Without Dieting, just came out and made a beeline for the bestseller list. According to Charla (and a few other style wizards), short of Photoshop, there's a lot of trickery to be had...

    The Shoes

    Not so hot: Chunky platforms, flats, round- and square-toed styles all make your legs look heavier, says Charla. As for high-heeled gladiators? "I think they're horrible. If you've got fat feet or cankles, having a lot of straps is not a pretty picture."

    Instant slimmer:
    "What you want to do is keep the front of your foot free," Krupp says. "I love a nude pump. It lengthens your leg. If you wear a color that matches your skin tone, people take you in visually in one long look. (Even a black pump on white skin is fattening.) A slim pump with a pointy toe is the nonfat shoe of choice."





    The Legs

    Not so hot:: Pale, pasty skin.
    Instant slimmer: Self-tanner is your BFF. "Just don't overdo it," says Valerie Monroe, Beauty Director at O, the Oprah Magazine. "If it's too dark, you won't look skinny; you'll look weird." Go over the thicker, rough patches of skin (ankles, knees) with a damp towel so the tanner doesn't blotch there.


    The Pants

    Not so hot: "I don't think capris do anybody any favors unless you're really tall and thin-they just chop off your leg," Charla says.
    Instant slimmer: The rules of pants are: 1) flat front-i.e zipper on the side or back, and 2) no pockets. "Keep the length about a quarter of an inch from the ground and wear the highest heel you can stand in," says Charla. "And you'll look your longest and leanest."


    The Stomach

    Not so hot: A bloated belly.
    Instant slimmer: If you're going to show ab, avoid chewing gum, drinking carbonated beverages, and eating beans, broccoli, cauliflower, fatty meals, and salty foods, say the Nutrition Twins, Lyssie Lakatos, RD, and Tammy Lakatos Shames, RD, authors of The Secret to Skinny: How salt makes you fat. Drink extra water-yes, more, because it flushes out the sodium, as does potassium, which you can get in oranges and tomatoes.


    The Skirt

    Not so hot: Sorry, but ditch the low-rider look, unless you're built like Zac Efron. That includes Whirly skirts (those cute pouffy, layered minis with elastic tops you can slide down.) "This is not a great skirt for anybody who has wide hips," Charla says.
    Instant slimmer: "You want an A-line or pencil skirt-a skirt that's not going to cause such commotion on the bottom half of your body."





    The Face

    Not so hot: The chipmunk look.
    Instant slimmer: "Bronzer can bring out your bone structure and make your face look narrower," O Mag's Monroe says. "Very lightly, brush around the hairline, along the tops of the cheekbones, the bridge of the nose, maybe a touch on the chin-think of the spots where the sun would hit your face. Just do it subtly: You want to 'highlight' the contours, not 'create' them."


    The Brain

    Not so hot: Walking around feeling like a fat failure.
    Instant slimmer: "We all know women who think they've got the stuff, even if they don't," says psychologist Alice Domar, PhD, coauthor of Live A Little! "Men flock to them like flies to honey." Before you go out the door, look in the mirror, look hard, and find three things you love. Just try it."

    The Bathing Suit

    Not so hot: Boy shorts, baggy suits, and two pieces are on Charla's nix list.
    Instant slimmer: "A one-piece halter top is super flattering for a lot of women," she says. "And you wouldn't think so, but a high-cut suit gives you a longer leaner leg." But the big news? Spanx has come out with a line of Slimming Swimsuits. And it's not your typical matronly compression wear. These styles have a grip on fashion. Spanx even sells bikinis-happy summer!

      I think all of the advice given was actually horrible and i hope no one seriously follows it. The one model was entirely to old to be wearing that style of clothing, secondly the other outfit is cute but who is going to spend that kind of money on something you might wear once a month....or every other month. Be comfortable in your own skin, or lose weight. simple.

      We live in a world of self denial and gluttony. People are getting bigger and bigger I don't care how much self esteem you have if we as American don't get off our duffs and exercise and eat right we will have health care system that will go through the roof. I for one is doing something about my weight I can't take weighing this way anymore. I am taking the steps to do something and take each day as it come.

      Some of these tips are wrong! If you got big hips, make em look bigger(it makes your waist look smaller)! Poofy skirts make your waist look tiny and your but look bigger! And making your face look narrower is so un-feminine...and just cuz you're pale doesn't make you look fatter! Most people who are NATURALLY pale look HORRIBLE with tans, even fake ones, not to mention, fair skin is considered gorgeous in a lot of places outside the US. And some more tips from a real chubby person:buy high and midrise jeans. They help make your belly less noticable because they go on top of the bulge. skinny jeans are a major no-no for big hips(bad proportions)

      the best and healthiest way to look and feel thin is to exercise and to have a balanced diet. you won't fool yourself anymore or even the people around you..get up and hit the gym!

      People seem to be misinterpreting the avoiding ab bloat instructions. The article isn't saying don't eat beans and broccoli. Of course, you should eat them, they are very good for you. It's advising you to avoid eating them the day you decide to go out wearing a bikini top and low rise jeans.
      Oh, and the author isn't advocating super high heels. It's just a trick to make the leg look longer and leaner. It's not an every day tip.

      Well I find that my motivation comes from when I look in the mirror to see a gut sticking out. Than after a month of busting my ass in the gym i see the results. "but maybe that's just me" =P

      i just want all you women out there to know that all of us guys love it when a woman has the right attitude know matter if they look perfect or not. how you portray yourself can be the sexiest thing in the world! be comfortable and we will eat it up! and for the record, tim is an ass and i hope that just because he is doesnt mean we all are. none of us are perfect and the older we get the harder it is to stay looking like we did when we were 20. also, someome who puts in the effort, and i mean really tries, can usually keep up with our body as we age. good luck to all of you and remember we may have a few tims in the mix, but there are alot of us just the opposite. THINK SEXY TO BE SEXY!

      why i mean like just for once can't there be books about how to love and cherish yourself, insted of hhow to Change Your Style, or Change Your Body or just ridiculus phsyco babble bullish manuals about just changing yourself in general?! Women (black,white,asian,etc.) need to feel great about who they are everyday all day. I don't want to know about what I can do to change myself because I look too damn good already. Things such as this are not at all helpful. They just make you feel like you're not good enough! Just keep being you! If your fat fine, look good doing it! If your pale cool tans are lame anyway (btw I'm black sorry for any confusion). You don't have to be tan and pencil neck skinny to be beatiful JUST BE YOU AND WORK WHAT YOU GOT! ; ) <3

      I recently bought the book and I absolutely do not agree with the part where she says shorts and capris make you look fat and to wear knee-length skirts instead-NOT! Why in the hell would I want to wear a skirt while I'm doing outdoor activities like gardening in the heat of summer, to only look a few pounds lighter? This woman has no grasp of reality! Not all of us live in Hollywood where appearence is everything.

      Hey, not everyone has time to exercise, new moms, overworked people. Eat as healthy as possible and exercise when you can. Try one clothes, shoes for fun, see what looks good! I love exercise, but these past two months have been crazy! Now I understand when people say that they don't have time to exercise! Don't know until you've been there!

      Well let me ask you this...do you watch tv ever? Do you....read a book ever? Do you take hour long baths that would normally only be 10 minute showers? If you answer "yes" to any of these than you have time to exercise. Everyone can make time int heir day to get healthy if they really want to. Don't be lazy

      Loved "The Look Slimmer" tips, they give you a great boost, while diet and exercising, youu can still look good, and feel slim...through the process!!!!!

      yOU HAVE IT ALL WRONG BE COME A VEGAN AND I GUARANTEE YOUR BODY WILL HAVE SUCH A METAMORPHIS THAT YOU WILL BE BLOWN AWAY. CUT OUT MEAT, FAT AND DAIRY. SUBSTITUTE THEM FOR FRUIT VEGETABLES, RICE, PASTA. i HAVE DONE IT AND MY BODY IS WOW. DR. NEAL BERNARD HAS IT ALL RIGHT. i PURCHASED 4 BOOKS ON VARIOUS TOPICS BY HIM.       Ok, 1. My "pasty and pale" skin, is awesome. I'm a natural red head, I think I look awesome with my pale skin. In my whole life I have never heard "wow you have pale skin, that makes you look fat. Thank you :)
      2. Flats do NOT make you look fat, I'm 5'7" and flats make me look amazing.
