Six Tricks to Double Your Calorie Burn

A plateau is a lovely thing when you get to it after hiking all day. It's not, when describing your fitness efforts!

Plateauing means that despite dragging your body to the gym every day, it's gone into slacker mode. Your weight won't budge, your muscles go on hiatus. Bikini season is only three months away. This is no time for your workout to conk out.

Enter The Hollywood Trainer, Jeanette Jenkins, with jumper cables. "People get into an exercise rut," says Jenkins, whose students have included Queen Latifah and Christina Applegate. "You can go to the gym for 30 minutes and burn 300 calories. Or go and burn 600. You can literally double the amount."

Here, she shows six ways to do that--techniques she perfected for her new super fat-blaster DVD, "Bikini Boot Camp." "In my other DVDs, even I dilly dallied-I put down the weights, took a little breather. But on this one, there's not a moment to think about resting. It's boom, boom, boom, next, next, next. We maximized the calorie burn for the time spent. And you can definitely do that with your own workout."

    1. Combine upper and lower body: For example, instead of standing there doing biceps curls with dumbbells, add simultaneous stationary lunges.

    2. Shuffle with your walk: During a 30-minute power walk, include 5 intervals of side shuffles lasting 60 seconds to 2 minutes each.

    3. Insert cardio blasts: Instead of resting or texting between sets on the weight machines, do 25 to 30 jumping jacks, alternating knee lifts, or front kicks.

    4. Wear a weighted vest: This will double your burn while walking, hiking, running, or taking a cardio class.

    5. Do drop sets: For weight training, start off each set with the heaviest amount you can lift for 10 to 15 reps; then drop the weight 50 percent and continue to 25 reps.

    6. Bump up your weights. While taking a sculpting class, push yourself to use 2 to 3 pounds more than you normally would. "It will make an incredible difference," says Jeanette.

Speaking of calorie burn, what burning questions do you have for Jeanette?

I'm a massage therapist and working on my undergrad in Exercise Science and can tell you that if you want to lose weight, it really doesn't matter how you work out, when you work out, low intensity vs high intensity, etc. None of that matters. What matters is creating a negative caloric balance. If you're burning more calories each week than you're taking in, then you WILL lose weight. 3500 calories = 1 pound. The easiest way to do this is to use a combination of diet and exercise, because if you just decrease your caloric intake your metabolism will slow down to accomodate it, so exercising keeps your metabolism up. Also, keep in mind that trained muscle burns fat when the body is at rest. So, to lose 1 pound a week: decrease your caloric intake by at least 250 calories per day AND do an exercise that burns at least 250 calories, and you will have a balance of -500 calories x 7 days/week= 3500 calories. The number one mistake people make is not being honest with themselves about how much they're actually eating. Good luck everyone!

      "muscle weighs more than fat"

Please...do the math. A pound of anything is a pound. Muscle is more dense than fat and takes less space. Yes..if you muscle build you won't lose much weight, but you'll look and feel much better. I work out and have lost a pants size and gained a few pounds.

      These are not tricks.
      I knew them since ever.
Give me a way to get slim with no effort.
Not even the effort of remembering to stop eating.
      That is a trick.

Um 600 calories/day? That is called starving yourself and is ludicrous, not to mention that few people will be able to maintain something so restrictive! Good way to encourage anorexia though. And cutting dairy...not good for so many reasons. Think protein and calcium (calcium has been linked to weight loss in several studies), and guess what diary products do come in low fat or fat free varieties. It takes roughly 1400 calories a day just to perform normal functions like breathing...people are not intended to live on 600! Whether you are trying to lose weight or not.

Kelly, I'm by no means an expert, but you may have gained "weight" because of added muscle. You didn't say what your diet consists of, but I do know that it would be wise (if you haven't done it already) to cut out processed sugar, liquid calories, eat fruits and vegetables, brown rice, wild salmon, lean meat and of course drink plenty of water. You also didn't mention how often you exercise. I think that 4-5 days a week would be enough. I hope you don't do all of this in one day (you would be overexerting yourself). Remember: losing weight and keeping it off is 80% healthy diet/20% exercise. Good luck!

She might be a "celebrity trainer" -- but this woman doesn't seem like a GOOD trainer. Losing weight and increasing cardiorespiratory efficiency go hand and hand. To increase cardiorespiratory efficiency, there must be a SUSTAINED venous return of blood to the heart. Her "cardio blast" idea will be mostly ineffective, except for the most untrained individuals. Any exercise routine needs a progressive intensity. The primary physiological adaptation to cardiovascular training is an increase in one's maximal oxygen uptake -- VO2 max. It is this adaptation that causes one to have greater endurance during exercise and will allow one to increase the frequency, duration and intensity of exercise. As the cardiopulmonary circuit becomes more efficient in delivering oxygen to metabolically active tissue, one can progressively increase the intensity of exercise, which will have a greater impact on body composition. BUT the exercise must create a sustained return of venous blood to the heart -- the key word there being "sustained." 60 second "cardio blasts" will not do that.

Some of her other suggestions were more helpful. A weight vest is an effective way to increase resistance during exercise. "Bumping up the weight" is important, as well. Because again, like cardiovascular training, strength training must have a progressive resistance. But the number of repetitions in her drop sets are too high, unless she is again working with an extremely deconditioned individual.

Marry Foreign Women, are you insane?! Those women in bikinis are FAR from being obese. You need to either get your eyes checked or go see a therapist (better yet, do both).

I am 53 and weigh the same as I did in high-school when I played football and boxed. I have freaky washboard abs for any age. My advice is "do the math". Monitor calorie intake daily. Food now is so rich in calories. You do NOT lose weight exercising. You lose it by mental control over your food intake and control over your animal-impulse behavior... What's wrong with feeling the sensation of hunger in your stomach? The rest of the world feels it every day and cannot remove it by going to the fridge...I was in an anatomy class at Ohio State in my 20's. I'll never forget seeing human fat. It was yellow clumps of disgusting goo like you see in a chicken. That was the turning point to watch your scale daily... my two cents

Good advice HP! Thanks for posting! I lost 46 lbs last year and have been on a plateau ever since. I was doing water aerobics, and I mean real water aerobics, not that blue hair stuff for a year 5x's a wk, I have since cut down to 2x's a week and added in a FIT class, a cuircut training class, and walking to change things up. I'm drinking a ton (really about 3 qts) of water a day and eating a huge salad for lunch w/ either grilled chicken or tuna. This is after my protein shake in the morning and then dinner varies, but I keep it healthy. I'm hoping this gets me out of that plateau! It's hard work.....Any more tips you have would be appreciated!

I have a question. I have been working out since January, I have do about 1 hour on the tred mill, bike or other machinary. I do about 1 hour of a steps class. 30 minutes of abs work out and an hour of body sculpting. I also do 30 minutes to an hour on a speed bike. Yet I have only gained not lossed weight. I have not changed my diet. What am I doing wrong?

If Kelly really is building muscle (hence the weight gain) she should see it in the way her clothes fit. You DO want to build muscle - it's the muscle that burns your calories! Next time you're at the store compare the size of 5 lbs of butter to 5 lbs of fat - you'll see what I mean!

I was experiencing the issue last year. I had a LOT to lose and it wasn't until I went organic, cut out sugar and grains (I know get all my fiber and carbs from fruits and veggies) and took it easy on the muscle building and concentrated on sculpting through Pilates that I REALLY started to lose. At that point it pretty much just fell off.
      Good luck to you.

I am a short girl who has typically maintained weight my whole life. The only variations I have had were during pregnacy; however over the last two years I have gained about 15-20 lbs. My diet hasn't changed much, and I am just as active or inactive as I use to be. I don't have a high calorie diet. I would say my typical diet is probably around 850-1200 calories per day. I recently joined a gym with a friend to try and rid myself of this excess weight. We work out 2-4 times per week, schedules permitting, for about 45 minutes. On at least two of those days we do the stair climber, then weights working on arms, legs, hips, and abs, and then we got to the bike. On the other two days we will spend the whole time on just the bike or the stair climber. I have also cut soda about 90% out of my diet. My questions is this. . . At what point should I start dropping the weight. We have a goal of 10 lbs by June (swimsuit time) and I have the other 5-10 by the end of summer. I am 5 foot tall and currently weigh around 122 lbs. My ideal weight would be 105. Any suggestions or advice?

This is so stupid. Losing weight is simple, people just try to complicate it. All you have to do is change your diet, eat right, and eat the right amount of calories. For a flat stomach, I recommend and have used this first hand: ( HITT ), in 20 mins i ran 3 miles. Great workout.

hey Kelley, I have lost72 pounds and this is all I did. I started weight training and had to put a hold on that so I could get rid of "xtra" backage first. Yes muscle mass does trump 'fat' weight. If you are muscle training you are going to see increase in weight but that does mean you are getting bigger aroung waist line. The only thing you need to do to go down sizes is take in only 1200 calories a day and walk 30 mins a day and do not dring Any sodas and you will lose 20 pounds right off the bat and that is a fact. After you get to "clothes size you want to be at then you start toning and muscle training. That is my advice and it is good considering I was in 20 plus size and now I am in a 11-13 juniors. That is all I did and it took 8 months and i am in love with weight lifting but I put it on hold, but now I am going to start back now that I shed the fat. Time to know..have faith you can do it. I never cahnged the type of food i ate just caLORIE COUNTED AND WATCHED SUGARS ALSO. rEMEMBER no SODA:)
