What to Know Before You Spray-Tan

Want a bronze look this summer without the harmful effects of tanning beds and outdoor UV rays? Then a spray-tan is the way to go. But before you head to a salon, it's important to know what to expect (and avoid!)

We got all the facts - pros, cons, tips, and embarrassing confessions - from one spray-tan artist who's seen it all. Here's what she's learned.

    Spray-Tan vs. Tanning Booth
Unlike tanning booths, which offer some degree of anonymity, there's no room for modesty here. Everything's done by hand, so I have to be all up in people's business.

    Grin and Bare It

Since I see clients when they're most vulnerable (in a paper thong and under bright lights with all their wobbly bits showing), I'm as much a shrink as a spray tanner.

Women love to know how they stack up: "Do I have more cellulite than every one else? Am I hairier than the average chick?" Sometimes, the degree of self-loathing saddens me. I have some clients who keep their pants on and only get their upper bodies sprayed because they can't bear to show their legs. I tell them that it's foolish to compare yourself to an ideal that doesn't exist.
Does Spray-Tanning Work on African-American Skin? Find Out!

    Subtle Ways to Minimize Flaws
I can put a tiny triangle above the breasts to create cleavage, shade a bit of darkness under the butt for extra lift, or conceal cellulite by using a slightly warmer color on the backs of the thighs. It's all about subtlety. But the requests have gotten more specific and outlandish. They want amazing definition sprayed onto their muffin tops. I attempt to persuade them to be more realistic. My average client is a normal, pear-shaped woman with thighs and a butt. If I were to paint a six-pack on her, it would look ridiculous!

    Less Is More
As sunless tanning grows in popularity, I see more fake-tanorexics. They've lost their grasp on what looks natural. To them, the darker the better. Let me tell you, it's scary. No matter what your skin tone, you should never go more than two shades deeper. A spray tan only lasts about five days, and if you're too dark, you'll look like you have dirty, marbled skin when the color starts to fade.

    The Messy Side

Though we've worked out a lot of kinks, spray tanning still comes with some sticky consequences. Anyone (and anything) you rub against for eight hours will get streaked with tanner.

    Man Tans
Men make up about 30 percent of my clientele. Most of them are straight guys who got dragged along for their girlfriend's appointment and start coming back for their own work. They always want to go superlight, so no one (especially women) will be able to tell.

How to Get a "Natural" Spray Tan
Ready to go for the glow? Heed our insider's tips.

    • SEEK OUT A SPECIALIST. Many nail salons offer spray tans, but stick to a place that's got an extensive sunless-tanning menu.
    • EXFOLIATE - GENTLY. So many women scrub until their skin turns red. Exfoliate pre-tan only if you're really dry.
    • SKIP DEODORANTS AND PERFUMES. They can prevent the tanner from penetrating and might stain the skin.
    • SHAVE BEFOREHAND. Defuzzing after will shorten the tan's life span by two days.
    • WEAR LOOSE CLOTHES. Anything tight, like denim, will suck the tanner right off.
    • STAY DRY. Once you're sprayed, wait eight hours before you hit the shower.
    • SOCK IT. Wear socks on your hands while sleeping the first night. This prevents handprints on random body parts.
    • SOAK IT OFF. When the tan starts to fade, take a bath. Then buff yourself with a towel. The flakes will fall off.
Have you had a spray-tan? Would you recommend it?

I got the Versaspray and it was the best! I actually looked tan and not orange and I have pale skin that never tans, just gets a deep pink. I am hooked for sure!

Spray Tanning is the way to go! Its safe and very effective. Just make sure to follow the rules if you do the versa spray booth. once I got really close to the sprayer thinking i would get darker but noooo it just made huge blotches of color on the back of my arms! I love Spray tanning though I wish it would last longer!!!

Cyndi, I started laughing when I read your comment; "I looked like a carrot. An unhappy carrot." LOL!

I never got it? Why pay for a fake tan when you can just go outside and soak in the sun for couple of mintues? All that money being wasted on something you can get/do for free.

Because not everyone is lucky enough to be born with the pigmentation needed to tan. I can't, it's impossible for me because I am a redhead and people that are ignorant like you, make fun of, laugh and point at people like me for being pale so we do stupid things like spray tanning to make ourselves feel better.

Pale is beautiful..don't let that darker stuff fool you...they just want money

I am lucky because my boyfriend actually prefers my "soft and smooth ivory skin".
Yes ladies, not everyone wants a tan (real or otherwise). It also helps that he has
red hair and he couldn't get a tan if he tried! Keep looking might find your match as well.

Help the rocks - I use lightening creams in the winter time. Once tanning season is over, I start to use the lighteners through the winter on my face to fade any sunspots. It helps even out my already-pale complexion. I just stick to winter time months though so I am ready when spring arrives.

My mother, my daughter and I all got a mystic tan before spring break last year. The booth experience is a bit awful, the tans set up nicely, but didn't last. The tanning salon operating didn't tell us that as soon as you step in to salt water, like the Pacific ocean, the tan immediately rubs off. This left the three of us streaked and faded for the rest of our vacation. Not worth the 40.00 dollars a piece. I now use an at home gradual tanning foam. It doesn't make me as dark as the spray tan, but I don't get the streaks and since I apply it every few days, I don't have to worry about fading. At 6 bucks a can, I only spend about 25 bucks a year, not bad in my book.

Spray tanning a day before an important event is a must. In pictures, your skin tone glows with a warm radiance. If you turned an orange color, you may have gone to an unexperienced salon or choose the wrong level of color.

I tried it once - what a waste of money. It didn't do anything. 8 hours later I looked exactly the same as I did before I went in.

The sad thing to those who do this kind of thing to make them look as if they have been laying out in the sun....They do not realize how bad to fake they really look!.

I have a question, is there anything you can do about spray tan getting into your pores because of shaving? When I shave my legs before a spray tan, it leaves little brown dots all over my legs from where the hair was. Any way to prevent that? Or am I just screwed with giant pores? Haha!

danielle- i had a similar experience to yours. i used a mystic tan booth. i tried holding my breath but it was so cold that it shocked me into breathing. i inhaled a little bit of the stuff. afterwards, it was streaky and i had exfoliated beforehand like i was told to do. it was a horrible experience and i'm never doing it again. i'd rather have my pale skin than be streaky.

i got an airbrush tan once... i liked it but there was one problem... any places where you have a little extra fat might cause creases. i got one under my ribs. also, i was rediculous looking for those 8 hours that i couldn't shower. but once i could shower the color faded to a nice realistic tan color. i'd go again

I haven't ever been airbrushed, but I've done the Mystic Tan where you just stand in a booth and get the stuff blasted on. If you pay attention to the instructions it works great! It usually lasts about 8 days!
      • crystal 20 days ago
i did mystic tan once too. Stuff smells at tastes awful. looked fine though, lasted a long time =]

I've only spray tanned once and it was one of the worst experience of my life! They had none of the supplies I needed and when I got in the booth and the tanning solution hit me it was so cold I couldn't catch my breath. I ended up eating a bunch of the spray it was so disgusting not to mention I didn't have just streaks, but green streaks everywhere afterwards. Needless to say I didn't leave the house for a while after that.

One day out in the sun and I'll get some weird farmer's tan. I was thinking about doing this to get an even tan look for my brother's wedding. I'm still not sure if it'd be worth it. I'm a little worried about rubbing off on everything. I think in the end I'm just going to go natural with my farmer's tan.

Was considering fake tan as the sun started coming out up here in the north...

        After seeing that.
I think not. Pale it is. I hope the world goes blind. x3

lol spray tan is just nasty. it makes you orangey or brownish and that's not even a good thing. plus it might come off onto other things or articles of clothing, that's just bad.

yikes tanning beds are totally bad for you. i don't recommend them at all. plus the fake tans look horrible, some people fake bake for too long in those machines and they look scary when they come out of them. the fake tanning lotions are nasty, they can make you look blotchy or streaky or both lol, if not applied right and they look fake also. mostly if they come off the next day or can be showered off and if you forget to reapply it. some even make the skin appear orangey or an odd colour that makes you look silly. spray tans even if it's done by a professional can make you look scary too. some even make em too dark and also fake looking.
