  • Room to Grow: The School Bus Shuffle

By Meagan Francis, on Mon Oct 6, 2008 8:55pm PDT

Every morning when the alarm goes off, my husband and I begin a quiet battle. One of us has to get up right away to get the two oldest kids off to school, while the other gets to sleep for another half-hour or so, and we'll do anything in our limited early-morning power to avoid being the...

  • Room To Grow: Eating for one...and one-one-thousandth?

By Meagan Francis, on Thu Sep 25, 2008 1:25pm PDT

According to the pregnancy calendar on BabyCenter.com, my baby currently weighs about 3.5 ounces. Using some rough and rudimentary math that will likely turn out to be incorrect (guess I better start outsourcing my 5th-grader's homework help), that means that my baby is a little more... • Room To Grow: You're having how many?

By Meagan Francis, on Tue Sep 23, 2008 12:32pm PDT

Last week, it finally happened: a man on an elevator asked the question, "So, when are you due?" I knew it was just a matter of time. I'm 15 weeks along, and for the last couple of weeks I've been getting a lot of those "wow her belly looks kinda big but no way am I gonna ask if she's pregnant" looks. Finally, I seem to have broken through the barricade to the point where brave (or foolish) souls will not only assume I'm probably pregnant, but actually ask. I admitted that he was the first person who'd asked, and actually stumbled around for a minute trying to remember how to answer his question. When am I due, again? Finally I remembered. "March." "First baby?" he asked with just a flicker of a patronizing smile on his face. "No, uh...fifth." I said. Read More »

  • You gotta fight for your right....for peanut butter and jelly?

By Meagan Francis, on Mon Jun 23, 2008 8:00pm PDT

Photo Credit: Getty ImagesThe other day a mom I know was telling me about a new no-peanuts policy at her three-year-old son’s daycare center. A new child will soon be attending the center, and he suffers from a life-threatening peanut allergy. To protect him, the entire school is going peanut-free: nothing cooked in peanut... Read More »

  • Finally, a double stroller that that works!

By Meagan Francis, on Sat Jun 7, 2008 3:19pm PDT

Both sets of my kids (10 & 8, 4 & 2) have about a two-year age spread from one other. For the first six months or so of each younger sib’s life, getting around was no big deal—I’d just pop the little one in a sling or backpack carrier and push the older one in a single stroller. But as... Read More »

  • Restaurant dining on a budget

When we moved to Chicago last year, I was floored by all the restaurants available to us within a mile radius. Whereas we were limited to a couple of family-style greasy spoon restaurants, fast food, a Chinese place, and pizza in our old town, we now have a cornucopia of ethnic restaurants of every variety, fine dining, and every fast food restaurant known to man within a short distance.

The temptation to eat out too much is great.

One of the greatest things about living in an ethnically diverse area is all the different foods to try, but with six people in my family--two of whom are preteen boys--eating out can be a budget-crusher. Luckily, we've found some ways to sample new fare without going in the red:

  • The Birds and the Bee Gees

By Meagan Francis, on Wed Apr 16, 2008 2:12pm PDT

"Mom," my 10-year-old son said to me the other day, "When are you going to tell me about the birds and the Bee Gees?" After I was done laughing, I felt a twinge of guilt about the fact that my son, who is decidedly a "tween" and moving ever-closer to puberty, is so in... Read More »
