As you know, I've got an itty bitty closet situation in my post WWII bungalow. Normally, with the season change I do a complete swapout of my summer versus winter clothes, folding and reorging everything during an entire weekend marathon session, but this year, either I've run out of patience or I've finally accumulated too many garments, because I have instead devoted one wall of my bedroom to two gigantic industrial baker's racks and many little steel bins from Ikea. Yes, it looks like I sleep the middle of an Old Navy, but the fact that I no longer have to shove all of my carefully folded tees and jeans up into the single shelf in the closet has been a gigantic improvement in my well-being. (See some of our favorite plus-size fashions.)

When I was 20, I was engaged in a bunch of unhealthy attempts to drop poundage, and one of the things I was doing was drinking a lot of water. Water was good, they said! Water helps you lose weight! (This was years before scientists told us that Read More »

One of the best and most empowering things that the Elastic Waist Fitness Challenges have demonstrated is that you can be active and strive for fitness no matter what the number on the scale (or on the dress tag) says. I love that about you guys. I love that you refuse to believe that the only people who get to have fun in sports or work out at the gym are the people who look like the glowy hardbodies on the cover of Self or in the Nike and Reebok commercials. I know, from your comments, that many of the participants in the fitness challenges are struggling with body issues and that I'm not the only one who is over size 12 (and distinctly larger than Oprah).

The economy is in the crapper, we're all losing our jobs to the end of year budget slice-and-dice, and Christmas is going to be kind of depressing. You know that things are really bad when the price of lobster has dropped so much that it becomes recession-proof dining. Although, really, when you think about it, even at $10 a pound, it's cheaper to make lobster at home than go out for a mediocre burger at Applebee's, and at those prices, you can afford to get a little reckless with your ingredients and try something new. Over the weekend, I was driving the countryside with my mother-in-law and we spotted a flock of wild turkeys, which always makes me crazy happy. We never used to see turkeys when I was a kid and that's all directly linked to the environmental impact of DDT on the Wisconsin wildlife. No turkeys, no hawks, no pelicans either, but now they're coming back and it's a beautiful thing. I found myself branching into a litany about the evils of pesticides, which then devolved into a rant about HFCS. Then I realized that the words coming out of my mouth sounded eerily very similar to a speech I'd heard from a crazy homeless person, only he brought his argument back around to Jesus, while mine cited the gospel of Michael Pollan. The big news today is that Oprah has gained weight. Not just gained weight. She claims that she now weighs 200 pounds. She stands on the cover of her magazine, next to a thinner version of herself, looking at her former body apologetically, hiding in a freaking jogging suit, as though the approximation of workout wear lessens the blow.

Esteban is embarking on another week-long business trip, which always reminds me how he affects my eating habits. For instance, during a usual weeknight, we make dinner, usually comprised of some kind of chicken affair, paired with steamed veggies, and if Esteban is cooking, sometimes he'll make something potatoey.
When I'm alone for a week, I tend to make myself vegetarian meals, usually stir-fry with brown rice that I will then eat for the rest of the week, as well as at least one dinner that consists of a giant spinach salad and a bowl of cottage cheese. Read More »- Let’s talk: Comment (20) | Blog

You may have heard about the importance of your waist-to-hip ratio and you've also probably heard that 0.7 is supposedly the magic number when it comes to male-to-female attraction. That was Marilyn Monroe's number. Jessica Alba is about 0.7 too. So is the Venus de Milo. And while scientific studies have suggested that the waist-to-hip ratio is a better determiner of health than BMI, new arguments are being made that 0.7 is not necessarily where it's at when it comes to men's hardwired sexual responses. Elizabeth Cashdan from the University of Utah argues that maybe a little squiggle in the middle isn't so bad after all.
