I don't eat take-out very often--as I actually find coming home and cooking dinner to be a great stress reliever after a hard day at work--but sometimes I'm tired, out of food or in need of MSG, and on those days take-out comes calling. On those days that I succumb to dish-free eating, I have a few tricks I use to keep the whole thing a bit healthier, or at least to trick my brain into making me think I'm a healthy-eating rock star. Here are some of my favorite take-out tactics:

  • It's totally okay to be in a holiday funk

By Kimberly Rae Miller, on Tue Dec 9, 2008 12:06pm PST

There is so much pressure to be happy around the holidays. If you're not a holly-jolly ball of yule time fun, well, then you better pretend you are. Did you know the number one day for DOA arrivals at Emergency Rooms is Christmas Day. Why? Because people are all supposed to be happy; not... Read More »

  • How to find the middle ground in fitness

By Kimberly Rae Miller, on Mon Dec 8, 2008 7:42am PST

Slowly but surely I'm learning to listen to my body when it says enough is enough. I have always been an extremist, hence me growing up with a somewhat unhealthy relationship with food--I was either binging or starving. As I got older, I learned that there was a middle ground to eating, but now my manic tendencies show up in my exercise habits. Read More »

  • 6 things to do before 2009

By Kimberly Rae Miller, on Fri Dec 5, 2008 10:39am PST

As I was writing out my monthly resolutions it hit me: I've got 4 weeks to wrap up my 2008. There are things that need to be done, and not all of them pretty. So I've made a list...a friendly reminder, if you will, of things to get done before the end of the year:

  • Holiday rule #1: There will be no dieting on holidays

By Kimberly Rae Miller, on Mon Dec 1, 2008 8:39am PST

There were two rules in my house growing up when it came to eating:

    1. You have to try everything; if you don't like it you don't have to eat it. (Disclaimer: this rule was often stated but not followed. I distinctively remember sleeping at the dining room table after a "You will stay here 'til that plate is clean'" lecture.)

  • I'm dreaming of a cheap Hanukkah, Christmas, Kwanzaa

By Kimberly Rae Miller, on Mon Nov 24, 2008 7:56am PST

I'm all about budgeting this holiday season. It looks like I'm going the made with love route this year as flour and butter and card stock are cheaper than GPS systems, gift certificates and sweaters. Let's face it: it is the thought that counts. But no one wants ugly, useless stuff either, so I've put together a list of do-it-yourself holiday gifts that may actually see the light of day and/or the inside of someone's stomach lining:

  • Another useless study: Happy people don't watch tv

By Kimberly Rae Miller, on Fri Nov 21, 2008 9:29am PST

Studies are fun, aren't they? They give us all sorts of hard and steady facts to obsess and over-think about. Well, according to a new Read More »

  • Top 5 reasons to hit the gym this winter

By Kimberly Rae Miller, on Tue Nov 18, 2008 10:17am PST

Oh, brrrrrrr. It's cold. Cold makes me want to hibernate, well not so much hibernate as sit on my couch drinking cocoa while watching Colin Firth movies--which, according to the last time I checked, does not actually qualify as exercise. Unfair but true. The sun raises later and sets earlier, which means I wake up and still want to be sleeping and leave work and want to go right back to the comforts of my PJs, but this winter I'm determined not to fall back into past winter's slothfulness. In an effort to motivate myself to get to the gym in the colder months ahead, I've made a list of all the great reasons to go to the gym. I'm sharing it with you because perhaps, just maybe, you share my winter-time exercise avoidance syndrome.

  • Don't forget to eat these wintertime fruits!

By Kimberly Rae Miller, on Wed Nov 12, 2008 12:31pm PST

    pomelo.jpg
Summertime and the eating is easy. Luscious, juicy fruit is abounding, local farmers markets are bustling with activity at their fruits and veggie stands. I could live on the pickens of the earth entirely and never miss cooked food. But, it's not summer. It's late fall and somehow to me that translates to no-mans land when it comes to produce, especially fruit. Walking around the Green Market this weekend, I noticed a striking lack of fruit and an even more striking uptake on the amount of baked good stands. No wonder my winter wardrobe consists mostly of loose fitting sweaters. Read More »
