If you are like me, you have a child, a niece, a nephew or friends with children that are students in need of a job.
My daughter and my niece both thought they had jobs lined up -- my daughter for the summer and my niece upon graduation -- only to find that hiring plans had…

The bad news is that, although job losses in April shrunk to their lowest level in six month according to the U. S Department of Labor, the economy is still shedding jobs. The good news is that for people who are employed or who are able to find jobs, salaries are increasing.
While many people think they are more likely to be hired if they ask for a low salary, nothing could be further from the truth. Companies are not looking for "bargain basement" employees. Employers hire people based on what they offer the company. If an individual can help their business survive and prosper in a difficult economy, employers are willing to pay that person what they are worth.

I hear many people these days complain about how difficult the job market is and how they will never find a job as good as the one they just lost. Even more troubling, some people I know who have lost their jobs are not really actively searching for a job. A friend told me she was going to take the summer off because she thinks the job market will be better in the fall. Several others are taking their time because they received a decent severance and are getting unemployment benefits.
Then there are those individuals who are aggressively out there looking for that next opportunity.

During my 20-plus years as a senior human resources executive, I have been involved in numerous layoffs. The process used to determine who stays and who goes is anything but an exact science. While some choices are obvious, many are not. There are three basic criteria used to determine who is terminated: 1) the importance of the job functions an individual performs, 2) the quality of an individual's work, and 3) whether the people making the termination decisions know and like you. There are things that you can do to increase the likelihood that you will survive a downsizing.

A few years ago, I wanted to go to a local restaurant I had never been to before that featured jazz bands. I called to make a reservation, and by chance, the person who took my reservation was the owner. I arrived at the restaurant with a woman that I had just started dating. I was greeted warmly by the owner, given a choice table and treated like I was his best customer. The owner even sent over complimentary drinks. To say the least, I was puzzled by this behavior but because I was trying to impress my date, I acted as if this type of thing happened to me all the time.
When my date excused herself to go to the lady's room, the owner came up to me and said "You don't remember me, do you?" I told him I didn't. Then he said, "You fired me. And I wanted to thank you. Although I was devastated when I was laid off, it turned out to be the best thing that ever happened to me."

The government announced today that the unemployment rate is now 7.6% with a loss of 598,000 jobs in December. "These are not just statistic. This is real." So said President Obama referring to the unemployment rate.. I only wish the rest of our politicians looked at it this way. For… Read More »

Okay. I know we are actually in a recession and there are real problems in the economy. People are getting laid off (including 2 members of my family). But in writing my career column this week I noticed that all the bad economic news gets front page headlines and all the good news is buried on page 42 and reported as an aberration.
In the same week that very real layoffs at major companies dominated the news, here is the news you probably didn't see: Read More »- Let’s talk: Comment (36) | Blog

Lauren Herskovic's New Year's resolution is to "party more."<br><br>As managing editor of CollegeCandy.com, a blog for college women, Herskovic's responsibilities include writing columns about sex, relationships and partying. Being out of college for a few years now, this lifestyle no longer comes naturally. So she has resolved to "leave the house more, party more and meet more men" in order to have more to write about. <br><br>Most of our careers will not be helped in 2009 by partying more, but they will benefit from being proactive about how we manage them. When most people set goals for the New Year, however, careers tend not to be at the top of the list.
