From Magazine to Reality (Without Busting the C-Card)
Maybe it's gross to gush about the very magazine I sometimes work for, but I'm going to anyway. The September issue of Lucky fills me with glee. There are so many things I want and trends to try that I think I should use my weird-but-works trick of freezing my credit cards in a glass of water until my fall shopping fever passes. The thing I'm most excited about right now is new boots—specifically the riding styles in the September Shoe Guide. Read More »- Let’s talk: Comment (2) | Blog

The memory fades, the desire to buy things forges on
When I saw Julie Delpy's very cool movie 2 Days in Paris last year, there were certain items her character wore that I promised myself I would hunt down and find, no matter what. I had big plans: I was going to commandeer the actress's style completely, and it was all going to begin with one very awesome messenger bag. It's now 8 or 10 or 13 months later, and while I still want everything from the 2 Days in Paris wardrobe, I no longer remember specifics. Read More »- Let’s talk: Comment (0) | Blog

Can you accept not getting the thing you want for a close facsimile? That is the question
I've been a little fixated on my friend Emily's post from a few weeks ago about striped boatneck tops. In fact, I've probably clicked on it 96 times, gone to the website, almost bought the shirt, and then thought, "Wait, is $160 too expensive for what's basically a long-sleeved tee? But I want it! And it's eco! Yet it's still basically only a long-sleeved tee!" And on and on in my own little trying-to-be-responsible lameness. Read More »- Let’s talk: Comment (7) | Blog

On the Hunt for...Clothes by Mayle
Though I love and appreciate beautiful clothes, I've never been an expensive, statusy label person (I have therefore also never suffered from Label Tourette's, the disease where a person compliments your outfit and you compulsively blurt out "Marni!" or Prada!" because you need them to know). But if I were to spend anywhere near $1,000 on a designer dress, it would have to be from Mayle. Read More »- Let’s talk: Comment (5) | Blog

I feel confused about Project Runway, but I still want its clothes
So, I'm feeling completely ambivalent about Project Runway this season. I'm still mad at it for its upcoming move not only to the Lifetime channel, but also to L.A., and change of producers (it'll potentially be run by the people who brought you The Real World. Ugh). Even though I still find it engaging, I don't feel like investing any more devotion into a show that is about to completely vault the shark. Read More »

How to find a great vintage clutch on eBay
I know I've written about vintage clutches before, but I might as well admit that they're a bit of a sick obsession of mine. Do you know why? Well, they're cheap, for one thing. At around $15 a pop, they're less than many of us (not me, but still) spend on lip gloss. They're also capable of actually making your outfit dressier or cooler, depending on the style. Amazing eBay boutique...Persephone Vintage
Along with the slightly bad incident, something awesome happened yesterday. I was looking for a particular jumper to attribute to Red when I came across Persephone Vintage, a disarmingly cool eBay boutique loaded with stuff that I really, really want to wear and, even better, that I can actually afford to buy. It's based in New York and the seller's taste is geared to '60s, '70s, and '80s fashion—great, tailored clothes that had a retro feel but don't look too costumey. The problem with plaid
There is something wrong with me, and it's getting worse. For months now, I have been fixated on all things plaid—especially jackets, shirts, rompers, shorts, and scarves. It's almost to a point where all the items in my wardrobe clash (plaid on plaid? not a good look) and I fear this obsession is going to come back and bite me, much like the voluminous sack (read: pregnancy) dress did back in '07. My latest plaid craving is a skirt. Read More »

Seriously comfortable summer shoes
At the beginning of this season, I purchased a pair of Corso Como flats on a total whim. They are so cute—muted red leather with lacy cutouts—and surprisingly versatile too. They are also, honestly, the most comfortable shoes I've ever owned, kind of like slippers. I love them and therefore am completely wearing them into the ground. Before total destruction occurs, I need another pair of them, STAT. Read More »- Let’s talk: Comment (33) | Blog

On the Hunt for...Clothes by Theory
The ladies of Lucky magazine are big fans of the Theory label—in fact, sometimes I feel the gorgeous women in the beauty department could be spokesmodels for the brand. No wonder, really: It's a consistently classic, clean, well-made line made up of the kinds of slightly offbeat basics that really anchor a wardrobe. It can also be slightly expensive, especially for a girl with an H&M budget. Read More »
