The Food and Drug Administration gathered a panel of experts this week to address acetaminophen overdosing and medical complications that can arise from taking the painkiller. Panelists considered data on the incidences of liver failure, inadvertent overdoses, and deaths before voting on proposals for reducing these numbers.

Remember back in the old days when the treatment for infertility was thought to be simply having a lot of sex? Those days seem to be back.
This time around, though, the reasoning is not just that the more you do it, the more sperm will make their way to the waiting egg, and the more likely you will be to conceive. Read More »- Let’s talk: Comment (19) | Blog

I wasn't. Even when flu alerts first began to fly, I wrote, reported, and spoke on the radio about how we could take care of ourselves during the outbreak and why it was best not to panic.
"Wash your hands, get plenty of rest, don't share Kleenex," I said, echoing the CDC and other medical experts who essentially told us what we (should) do to avoid any other flu. Read More »- Let’s talk: Comment (7) | Blog

My parents let me stay up

I am a Ms. I was a Ms. when I was married, and I am a Ms. now that I am single. I was a Ms. when I was taught classes and today, I am a Ms. to my son's teachers. For as long as I can remember, I have been most comfortable passing over the boxes for Mrs. and Miss to confidently check Ms. Read More »

It was not my intention to watch THE BIG ANNOUNCEMENT! on "Jon & Kate Plus 8" last night. It was not my intention to watch it at all this season. Many, many episodes ago, Kate's self-proclaimed "germaphobia"and Jon's passivity wore me down.
Before the weariness set in, I did watch the show.

As you do when you are the parent of a child with some kind of health issue or even glitch, I have become an expert at dealing with motion sickness.
For as long as I can remember, my son has been what my mother calls "an urper." Especially on planes. Or in the car. Or when the stroller was trucking along too fast through the neighborhood. It's not a huge deal, not any kind of medical crisis, but it is something we've either had to prepare well for or deal with accordingly. Read More »- Let’s talk: Comment (12) | Blog

Every once in a while, a new supplement seemingly rises up to star status. Suddenly, this darling of the natural health world is said to cure what ails us, prevent what we're afraid of contracting, help us to be less stressed, not so obese, better rested, far from depressed -- or whatever health issues are also making the headlines.
Right now, that darling seems to be vitamin D. Read More »- Let’s talk: Comment (5) | Blog

I drink a lot of water. I keep full reusable bottles in the car, tote them around in my purse, and sip from them all day long at my desk. Not only do I feel better when I am well-hydrated, it keeps me from drinking too much coffee. But I admit, with all that water drinking in my diet, sometimes I get bored with the plain old stuff.

You and your girlfriends have been rebelliously scooping raw cookie dough up by the spoonful since you were tweens. Even today, you probably feel a little glee to sneak to the refrigerator in the wee hours of the morning or let your kids sample a broken off square or two of the prepared dough to keep to make cookies that never get baked.
Though you might have heard -- from your mother or someone else's parent or the unheeded warnings on the side of the package -- that raw cookie dough would make you sick, it never seemed to make you feel nauseated or unwell. Read More »- Let’s talk: Comment (11) | Blog
