I've worked full time from my home since 1992 and can't imagine doing it any other way. Whether you work full time out of your home, occasionally telecommute, catch up on work in the evening, or run a household, you need some sort of dedicated "office" space in your home. Offices can serve as the family computer center, a place to do paperwork, and the occasional work-at-home office.

The first big question is where to locate your home office. Until the last few years, most builders didn't catch on to the popularity of a built-in home office. If you have a computer, you might need more than an antique writing desk in the living room. But if you only use your "office'' to pay bills, write letters, and return phone calls, you can get away with a corner of the kitchen. If extra space is difficult to come by in your home, you'll need to get creative. Read More »

By DamselsInSuccess, on Tue Sep 2, 2008 8:38am PDT

People with high stress levels are more likely to have heart attacks and strokes, respond poorly to flu vaccines and catch colds more easily than those with low levels of work or interpersonal stress. • Why Women Attack: The Affirmation Effect

By DamselsInSuccess, on Thu Jul 17, 2008 6:55am PDT

I can’t take it anymore. If I see another angry, hateful, or myopic tirade about why some other woman’s decision about [insert personal life choice here] is better, I am going to permanently retreat into a little, teeny-tiny hole that bars all except my children, husband, and select friends from... • How to look like a workaholic in a 40-hour workweek

In a perfect world, we would be judged solely on our results, regardless of what others thought about how or when we got our work done. The good news is that this type of “results only” mentality is catching on. Some companies and managers are beginning to realize that there are better ways to manage performance than by counting hours at the office. Organizations are responding to the changing needs of workers everywhere by offering arrangements such as flex-time and telecommuting.

The bad news is that, like it or not, corporate mentality is what it is. The 40-hour week is not just an expectation; it’s the minimum, especially for salaried professionals. Self-proclaimed workaholics advertise their twelve hour days like a badge of honor and wouldn’t be caught dead leaving the office before 6:30.

Just because it’s the norm doesn’t make it right. Ready to take a stand? You don’t have to defy your boss and coworkers in a dramatic five o’clock showdown. Here are some practical ideas that can help you on your way to regaining control over your time. Read More »

  • Are You a Rapunzel or a Ladder-Kicker?

By DamselsInSuccess, on Wed Jun 4, 2008 8:15am PDT

There’s a great divide emerging between two categories of working women. Have you noticed it? No, I’m not talking about the working mums versus the non-parents – though the working mums might like the world to think that. Or the full-time-career-obsessed woman versus the... Read More »

  • Confessions of a Competitive Chick

By DamselsInSuccess, on Thu May 29, 2008 10:43am PDT

At the risk of sounding completely self-absorbed and superficial and, well…bitchy, I have to confess something that has weighed heavily on my mind since probably the first time I turned in a homework assignment (deep breath): I’m constantly comparing myself to others and their accomplishments.... • The beauty premium: Does being beautiful help in the workplace?

By DamselsInSuccess, on Thu May 29, 2008 10:40am PDT

Ladies, I think we always knew it was the case, but now it’s confirmed. Yes, the workplace is a beauty contest. And there’s a lot of research to back up the uncomfortable reality that attractive people get hired over those less so. And to add insult to injury, beautiful people get paid more, too!

Two prominent economists, Markus Mobius of Harvard and Tanya Rosenblat of Wesleyan, proved it with a research study based on a mock labor market where students were employers and job seekers. The job was solving mazes. The job seekers filled out a resume and then were given a simple maze to solve. To measure self confidence, job applicants were asked to estimate how many mazes they could solve in 15 minutes.

What the researchers did next was to have each employer hire a small number of job applicants. Some employers only considered the resumes of potential employees. Others saw a resume and photograph. Read More »

  • Ladies Who Lunch: You're Worthless Unless You're a Mom

By DamselsInSuccess, on Wed May 28, 2008 5:23pm PDT

Yesterday I met a friend/client for lunch at a lovely restaurant known for its salads and pastries. There were quite a number of tables inhabited by pairs of women. I arrived five minutes early, so I was seated in a corner table on a banquet, right beside two lunching ladies who were in their mid... Read More »

  • Top 10 Reasons Working Moms Rock

By DamselsInSuccess, on Wed May 28, 2008 10:13am PDT

Until I became pregnant, I generally believed being a woman both hurt and helped my career – it all came out in the wash, so to speak.  When I became pregnant, I hit the glass ceiling twice.  First interviewing while pregnant, and then getting underpaid by my old firm (see Economics of...
