[Ed. note: User Une Femme found a great way to satisfy her stainless-steel designer table jones—with a freestanding Ikea kitchen counter unit that costs less than a tenth what the designer version does. Another great source for sturdy stainless work tables is a restaurant-supply outlet, which you can probably find in your city's Yellow Pages. Thanks, Une Femme!]
A couple of years ago I needed a work desk that could take a beating. I looked around at thrift stores and other furniture retailers but nothing really caught my eye. Until I opened up my Design Within Reach catalogue to see a beautiful stainless steel work table with a not so beautiful price tag. I began to search around for something similar until I walked into Ikea and came across the Udden free-standing kitchen countertop. Yes, it was built for the kitchen but that is the kind of durability I wanted and needed. Say hello to the best $119 I've ever spent!

When I put it together I left off the back splash so I could work around all four sides. It has survived two moves and is very easy to clean.
