Refreshing, wasn't it, to not see Jenny Sanford standing silently beside her fake-Appalachian-Trail-hiking, adulterous husband? And, then, to see her personally hand her statement to reporters outside her home after her husband's tearful, meandering mea culpa before the cameras. How painful it must have been to hear the South Carolina governor apologize to his mistress before his wife.

Her statement is filled with references to forgiveness and reconciliation, and how she was/is all for working through this awful betrayal by her husband, Mark Sanford. But in clear, sharp words, she also tells the world she was/is not putting up with his infidelity and has put self-respect (and her son's respect) front and center: Read More »- Let’s talk: Comment (136) | Blog

The H1N1 flu (the pandemic formerly known as swine flu) is no longer front and center in the news, upstaged by protests in Iran and a southern governor who says he was hiking the Appalachian Trail but was really having an adulterous affair. You might think the worrisome virus has completed its journey. The anecdotal stories making their way around our area tell a different story: Kids hit by fevers at the end of the school year were sent home and asked to stay home for at least a week, final exams waived if need be. So do letters going out to parents about summer camps. The one from our township reads that a "Stay Home When You're Sick" policy will be strictly enforced. Read More »

In an especially tough year when money is tight, lots of expenses are falling by the wayside. When health care is among the expenses being postponed or pushed completely out of a family budget, it's frightening. A quarter of Americans surveyed in a Thomas Reuters study this week said they are struggling to pay for health care this year. And 17 percent said they have postponed or delayed medical services or treatments in the past year. Read More »

Driving a clunker? Or at least an older-model, gas-inefficient vehicle? Congress has approved a "cash-for-clunkers" program, designed to get fuel-hungry cars off the road, and--more to the point--get more people into car dealerships to buy new cars.

If your vehicle qualifies, it could mean a $3,500 or $4,500 voucher toward the purchase of a new, more fuel-efficient vehicle.
The program will run until Oct. 1, or until a $1 billion limit in vouchers is reached. Here's how it works: Read More »- Let’s talk: Comment (6) | Blog

Clearly, there is no crystal ball to tell us when this economic downturn has turned its last corner and is heading back in a steady, positive direction. But some areas of the United States are poised for a quicker rebound when the economy does tick upward, either because they weren't caught up in the housing bubble to begin with or because they haven't lost as many jobs as other regions. To all the debt-strapped consumers who have been asking, "Where's my bailout?" it seems the credit card companies are responding. If you ask. If you are carrying a debt on your card and have been unable to pay your credit card bills, some credit card companies are willing to…

When we plunk down the extra
cash it takes to buy products with labels assuring us we are
bringing home a greener, safer, maybe even organic product, we are
often taking a leap of faith. The list of ingredients may be
shorter than the ones on the chemical-laden products we've been

We know there is still work to do to close the wage gap between women and men. But researchers at Cornell University say there is another gap to close between two groups of women--mothers and their peers without children. They call it the "motherhood penalty" because they found through an experimental study that if two women with similar experience and skills apply for a job, the one who is a mother is less likely to get it. The recession marches on, and retail sales are dropping as we dial down our buying and get back to basics. But one item seems to be defying the wallet-tightening trend: smartphones. While cell phone sales overall are expected to decline, sales of BlackBerrys, iPhones and other smartphones are rising. Gartner, a technology industry research firm, projects smartphone sales to increase 25 percent this year. Read More »

That's what President Barack Obama said his administration is aiming to do. Back from a major diplomatic trip to the Middle East and Europe, the president turned first to jobs at the start of a new week. For good reason: Just before he arrived home, the government reported a hike in the unemployment rate to 9.4 percent, the highest in more than 25 years and higher than the administration projected for the start of summer.
