  • Editor's note: The following story originally appeared in Runner's World magazine and on Yahoo! Shine in early 2011-- it illustrates how running (or any form of exercise) plays a role not just in our physical health, but also our emotional well-being. Since the story published, Lisa Hallett, an Afghanistan War widow, ran her first ultra on July 21 by running 26.2 miles to the San Francisco Marathon (in 4:55), and then the race (in 5:00). She ran with Wear Blue, a team that memorializes the service of the U.S. military.

It's her mantra: Run for John, run for me, just one more step. For Lisa Hallett, whether solo in a marathon or with her kids in their mammoth, triple-wide jogging stroller during training, running is how she deals with the pain, the loss, and the memory.

"It's really hard to do day-to-day things-taking my kids to preschool and taking care of the house," says Hallett, a 29-year-old full-time mom. "On most days, if nothing else, I can say I ran. On some days all I can do

  • New research on soldiers shows how damaging stress can be-and reveals 5 powerful tools that can help us all build resilience

I'm married to to a full-time soldier, so few things get my attention like a headline about post-traumatic stress disorder. I've been riveted by the recent surge in PTSD research spurred not just by the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan but also by terrorism and natural disasters. • Honestly, you know what just bugs me for a while? When you plan, edit, and work on something for two weeks, no, practically a month, no wait, a year and suddenly your team abandons ship. Of course, I'm not too upset about it because, well, people do have lives. But say, you had planned this with someone for two weeks, a dance routine for a school event, suddenly two days before you get a chance to do it, that person decides that there's two little time. You offers ways to fix it because you don't want to give up, but it still doesn't work out with everybody, and you're force to quit after all the work you put in to learning something so you could choreograph it! Suhhh...why!!!

    Okay, now breathe.

Breathe in, and then breathe out!

Okay, so that was me an hour ago, technically I wasn't starkraving mad or crying mad, or anything I was just upset and disappointed. But you know what? I...got over it! You see, things like this tend to happen a lot in life, yes it does. It

While it is definitely possible to feel as if things are heading in the right direction after the first date, you can't know whether he is perfect for you. People are always on their best behavior when they meet someone new. It takes a long time to truly get to know someone. Although he might seem perfect, you shouldn't instantly jump to the conclusion that it's true, or even that he feels the same way you do. Before you tell the world you have found Prince Charming, make sure he really is.

You ignore the advice of other people because you "know" you're right about him
I have a friend who is drawn to men she will never have a future with. They're either too old, too young, married or using her. Every time she meets a man, she doesn't see Read More »from Signs You Are Too Quick to Fall in Love
