    • City of Seattle Allows Woman to Swim Topless in Public Pool

      Jodi Jaecks allowed to swim bare-chested

      Last year, shortly after discovering a lump in her right breast, 45-year-old Jodi Jaecks of Seattle was diagnosed with cancer. As a result, she went through chemotherapy and eventually chose to have a double-mastectomy. After being declared cancer-free, Jaecks wanted to regain her strength, become active again, and focus on fitness.

      Earlier this year, she attended an after-breast cancer class at the Swedish Medical Center where she was encouraged by a helper to take up swimming. The helper suggested that she go to the Medgar Evars Pool located in the Central Seattle district. There, the indoor facility uses less chlorine and the water is warmer.

      Jaecks went to the pool, spoke with an employee and the assistant manager, then went shopping for a swimsuit that wouldn't irritate her scars.

    • Is Adidas Poking Fun at Incarceration and Slavery with Their New Shoe?

      Is this a jab at slavery?Adidas is launching a new shoe in August and it's already generating a negative buzz. It's the JS Roundhouse Mids, and it features an orange shackle that is attached to the shoe by an orange chain.

      Some say that the shoe represents the shackles that are worn by Black males who are in the penal system, and black slaves who were oppressed for hundreds of years.

      my pet monster wears cuffPersonally, I hear that argument, and I totally understand the reason for the uproar, but how do you know that this shoe isn't a tribute to My Pet Monster? Huh? How do you know that this shoe doesn't have a theft deterrent system, great for inner-city living? Are we as black people so on the edge of our seats for a fight that we jump at anything that seems intentionally hurtful? The whole "angry Black routine" is getting old. We sometimes act like a person who was badly hurt in a relationship in the past, so incredulous that the current siggy other gets the blues for it.
