In 1970, Judith Ripka cared for her one-year old son and made gold rings by hand. Now Hillary Clinton, Michelle Obama, Oprah, Cindy Crawford, Tina Fey and Kate Hudson, to name just a few, chose to wear Ms. Ripka's jewelry. Her sitting room sofa has expanded to boutiques in 11 cities and over 100 retailers carry her line. Her company is presently valued in the mega-millions.

Inspiration

Judith told New York Times reporter Lorraine Kreahling in 1997 she had been accessorizing since childhood inspired by her mother and knew then she would become a designer of jewelry. From her mother's jewelry box, she added pendants to her belts, hung pins off of chains and transformed necklaces into belts.

From Buyer to Creator

She started in the business by buying jewelry for May's department store and learning metalwork and design techniques in a friend's watch case factory. In 1977, she began creating pieces to order. In 1982, she earned the De Beers, the billion-dollar gem award

The famous movie star, Marilyn Monroe made a very good point and observation; namely that we, women, can feel we will accomplish much if we dress well. It may not be a scientific fact; however, I personally have noticed a tremendous improvement in people's work when they're in their appropriate 9-5 attire, compared to the lazy Casual Friday garb.

They do make the man, that is, woman. The right clothes give us confidence in our ability to look good and be taken seriously. There's nothing like a fresh silk (or blend) blouse that rubs upon your wrist to make you feel more feminine and therefore, more capable to take the task on hand.

Whether in a meeting or a small briefing, it's this lady who commands attention and is given more feedback. The one who is pleasant to look at receives the pleasantries from co-workers, subordinates and superiors alike.

Why is weight loss so hard?

Weight loss is hard because of biology and genetics. Due to the way humans evolved, we are primed to gain weight during times of plenty in order to survive during times of famine. Our bodies have fat cells that store energy from food eaten in excess of the energy needed by the body. This energy would then get used when we had little or nothing to eat. In fact, the first wristwatch was invented by Patek Philippe as a piece of women's jewelry in 1868. Today watches are worn on the wrists of men and women and designer wristwatches are status symbols. How did this come to be?
