Do you ever look in the mirror and wonder why you aren't making any progress even with all the hard work you do ? As a fitness andnutrition counselor I often hear the complaint of the dreaded plateau from many..If you've ever yelled "WHY isn't this working?!" then there are some habits and misconceptions that might have been stalling your progress.

      1. Not enough exercise. So here's the thing: the difference between exercise and physical activity is that the former is planned and usually causes us to generate more effort than the latter. That leisurely stroll around the mall? physical activity. Strap on your exercise shoes, pick up the pace, focus on time with intent to get fitter and voila, you've got exercise. As little as 30 minutes per day of physical activity can benefit your health but weight loss requires more vigorous and more frequent workouts.

      2. Not eating enough. Sounds counter-intuitive right? Yes, expending more calories than you take in is the logical

    • Waiting to inhale...

As a wellness entrepreneur whose business revolves around information sharing and the provision services, I often find myself cringing at the amount of self promotion that goes into the process. Wait, I should say the "perceived self promotion" because what I consider marketing, some mistake for a need for the spotlight. Now don't get me wrong, my Oprah-Complex is relatively small. Yes, I do crave a platform because I realize that having a large one helps me to help more people. What is this nauseatingly pollyanna need to help people improve their health all about? Well, it is simple really.

I grew up on an island with access to fresh foods and plenty of physical activity. Those first ten years of life in READ MORE

    • The Birth of Spring

Well hello, Stranger, Long time no blog! What in the world have you been up to since last Summer? Here we are, almost the end of March and I'm holed up in my apartment waiting for the the sleet to end….wait, what? Isn't it over yet? It has to be soon because I need an excuse to wear these cute H & M clothes! Yeah, I've been "Spring" shopping to make myself feel better about the 50 million snow storms rolling through NYC. Don't judge me. Anyway, enough about the weather, let's discuss our waistlines shall we? Mine is a bit thicker than it was last Summer so I've been diligently trying to shed my winter insulation layer with more time on the Spin bike. Did I mention that I've become a certified Spin instructor since we last chatted? Yessiree, I am now qualified to wear spandex bike shorts with random writing all over 'Em. Team Me! I've gotta tell you that READ ON

    • You’re SOOOO good looking!!

So my phone is missing which is, embarrassingly, not unusual for my grown self. Poor phone probably felt me pulling away and gazing longingly at the iPhone. Now that Verizon has sold itself to Steve Jobs you'd expect a gadget junkie like me would've raced to get one, right? But I digress, the point here is that I covet an iPhone and upon hearing this, my current phone hightailed it to never-neverland. Self fulfilling prophesy? Maybe. How many times have you done that? Spoken, thought or said something only to have income to fruition? Those of you who clamored to read The Secret know where I'm going with this. Let me put it succinctly for those who didn't: don't wish bad luck on yourself in thought, action or deed. The things that you vocalize and think about the most gain power with each word and thought. I get it, self deprecation can be charming and being practical will keep you out of the poor house. However, speaking of and acting out your weaknesses will eventually lead to READ ON

    • Is your kid wearing a backpack or is the backpack wearing your kid?

Coming to a neighborhood near you: Attack of the Walking Backpacks! You see them every school term waddling out and onto school buses, through crosswalks and out of their parents cars. Some poor kid is hauling around what looks like camping gear on his/her back for the back to school school semester. It would be cute if it didn't look so painful, right? So what is the best way for your child ( and you!) to wear a backpack? The American Physical Therapy Association says:READ ON

    • Have Fibromyalgia? Read this before you exercise

Your joints hurt, you can't move much less get out of bed, the pain seems to be sending radio signals to every part of your body and you feel crazy. You aren't crazy, you have Fibromyalgia, a chronic disease characterized by wide spread pain and tenderness in joints and muscles. Aerobic exercise has been shown to alleviate some symptoms of fibromyalgia which is good news since it's important o maintain good health and weight.

Exercise is great: it whittles the waist, lifts the spirits ( not to mention the tush and tatas) and lowers your risk of getting some multi-syllabic disease. Still, you don't have to workout like Shaq to reap of those benefits. This is really important to remember if you have fibro and need to be aware of your triggers. If you suffer from fibromyalgia, it's important to start any exercise program with the foundation of a well rested body. That means eliminating stimulants like caffeine and getting to bed on time. From there, ease into shorter bouts of low impact

    • Change your thinking: pay more eat less

Ahhhh I just had a delicious lunch of tomato, squash and basil salad harvested from our very own rooftop garden. Just a hint of olive oil, salt and pepper equals perfection. The Mister has been diligently applying his green thumb to growing a very respectable crop of salad vegetables and strawberries over the past few months. He did it to save money on our vegetable bill and as I wolf this salad down I have to admit I'm impressed and grateful. As a nutrition advocate I am well aware that eating healthy is not always cheap and that makes me so sad. Taking care of our health should not cost us an arm and a leg! I also try to eat locally when possible because knowing where my food comes from and that I'm supporting my local butcher/grocer is important to me. But I realize it can be daunting to some who have a set budget and are faced with feeding more than 1 or 2 people.
But what if we thought about our food bill another way? What if we simply decided to accept that our food bill willRead More »from Change your thinking: pay more eat less
    • Uh-oh! Obesity rates are doubling???

Just when we thought things were getting better they get worse for some. According to the recent F as in Fat: How Obesity Threatens America's Future 2010 report, some states have seen their obesity rates double even in the face of the country's efforts to reduce the problem.

"Obesity is one of the biggest public health challenges the country has ever faced, and troubling disparities exist based on race,
      ethnicity, region, and income
," said Jeffrey Levi, PhD, executive
director of TFAH. "This report shows that the country has taken bold
steps to address the obesity crisis in recent years, but the nation's
response has yet to fully match the magnitude of the problem. Millions
of Americans still face barriers - like the high cost of healthy foods
and lack of access to safe places
. The report finds that southern states have the highest rates of obesity, diabetes and hypertension. Alabama, Arkansas, Kentucky, Louisiana, Mississippi, Oklahoma,
Tennessee and West Virginia have seen

    • Are you a slave to your sweet tooth?

A friend of mine recently asked me helplessly " what should I eat? what's okay? all the information is so contradictory that I feel lost!" I think she feels like most Americans do right now: so much information so little...understanding. When you throw in the "whys" of eating habits the information gets even more muddled. Why do some people make certain food choices when they know they shouldn't? who are the companies like KFC targeting when they offer a sandwich with 100 grams of fat in it? I recently read an article which reviewed research on why some find it so difficult to resist dessert while others have no problem. Investigators from Columbia University researched obese people's reactions to seeing and even hearing about fatty foods. Their findings explained exactly why fast food chains spend billions on advertising: It works! According to this and similar research, the pleasure and emotional centers in the brains of obese people light up Griswald style ( 80s movie pun alert!)
